These paintings are part of a series sparked by my discovery that the Pangaea supercontinent breakup some 250 million years ago was just the most recent instance of at least three successive global cycles of continental merger and separation. The ‘solid ground’ that. The four works shown represent one or another portion of the southern half of Pangaea, known as Gondwanaland. This landmass eventually separated to form Africa, South America, Antarctica and Australia.

X43;ontact. This series was motivated by two things, my interest in a non-sectarian response to the Islamic 99 Names of God meditation and a desire to explore including text in my work. I was struck by the many terms and phrases we use to refer to that mysterious “somethingness” we call God. Decisions to merge letters or mask legibility — all became part of the meditation. So far, I have completed nine names. This is a project that may go on for a while. X43;ontact.
