Therefore, in my opinion, although statistics are very useful to identify patterns in data and help provide evidence for theories we must be very cautious not to blindly accept the statistics put in front of us without questioning what they tell us and what they are based on as even an honest person can unintentionally manipulate the statistics in front of them. In natural observation (in the public) the participants are usually unaware that they are being observed and this can sometimes be harmless when it is a mere frequency count (for example noting the number of people who drop litter in a street). This is anonymous and the participant would not be subjected to any form of embarrassment or negative effects (presuming the psychologist is subtle!
