When I teach my students (primarily children) to play the piano, I focus on teaching them to read music. This enables them to play anything once they reach a certain level of reading proficiency.

At each lesson, I assign students something to work on for their next lesson. These are their short-term goals, and they help students to prepare for their next lesson. They also help them raise their song to the next level of playing. These are some examples of short-term goals:. Work through the left hand of a tricky piece. Play a piece with solid rhythm at a slow tempo. Increase the tempo of a piece by several metronome markings. Master a difficult measure once and for all. Learn a challenging scale.

I was introduced to an awesome computer program, Piano Wizard, that helps people learn the piano, with regular piano lessons. I have been using it in my studio and the reults have been amazing! Our lessons are SO much fun. Learning to read music can be very tedious and challenging and this program takes those factors out of the process and the results are fun and exciting and very rewarding. Performance Parties | Let's Play Piano

They are for students only; I have a recital at the end of the year for parents, family and friends. Performance parties are an opportunity for students to perform in a friendly, supportive and positive environment. Each student plays a song on the piano that he/she has prepared for the event. The the party is topped off with treats to eat, after all, what's a party without food?
