Liz's Eats and Arts: Spice Village, Emsworth

http://lizeatsandarts.blogspot.com/2010/05/spice-village-emsworth.html

Liz's Eats and Arts. Reviews of my favourite eateries, most of which are in the south of England, plus the occasional review of an art gallery or museum. Saturday, 1 May 2010. Spice Village, Emsworth. Considering Emsworth is such a small town, it has a surprisingly good choice of restaurants. A couple of them are right out of my price range, but the Spice Village, an Indian restaurant right in the centre of town, offers very good Oriental cuisine that is affordable as well. Spice Village offers a takeawa...

Liz's Eats and Arts: September 2009

http://lizeatsandarts.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

Liz's Eats and Arts. Reviews of my favourite eateries, most of which are in the south of England, plus the occasional review of an art gallery or museum. Wednesday, 30 September 2009. Dine at the Turtle Restaurant, Honfleur. Coffee was served in tiny, tall, slender cups along with a small wrapped plain chocolate, just the kind I like. I heard a lady at another table asking if she could have a tisane instead of coffee, and this did not pose a problem. 36 rue de l'Homme de Bois. Tel 02 31 81 24 60. We arri...

Liz's Eats and Arts. Reviews of my favourite eateries, most of which are in the south of England, plus the occasional review of an art gallery or museum. Saturday, 27 March 2010. We went in and found that apart from one group of half a dozen or so people, the restaurant was empty. We were shown to a table for four further back, as there didn't seem to be any tables for two. I appreciated the fact that the young waiter didn't hand me the menu until I had taken off my coat and sat down. Bollywood is comfor...

Liz's Eats and Arts. Reviews of my favourite eateries, most of which are in the south of England, plus the occasional review of an art gallery or museum. Saturday, 31 October 2009. Twenty-four hours in Zurich. Tuesday, 27 October 2009. Who would have thought that just along from Tesco Express and Ken's Kebabs would lie one of Southsea's best restaurants? I should mention that Rosie's, being a winebar as well as a restaurant, has an extensive wine list and there were leaflets on the table giving details o...

Liz's Eats and Arts: Wagamama, Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth

http://lizeatsandarts.blogspot.com/2010/06/wagamama-gunwharf-quays-portsmouth.html

Liz's Eats and Arts. Reviews of my favourite eateries, most of which are in the south of England, plus the occasional review of an art gallery or museum. Wednesday, 9 June 2010. Wagamama, Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth. We continued to study our menus and decided to order some yasai gyoza (£4.90): five steamed, grilled vegetable dumplings, served with a sweet ginger soy dipping sauce. These were from the side order section, and our idea was to share them. Monday – Saturday 12 noon – 11pm. Tel 023 9286 1128.

Books for your little ones: The Incredible Book Eating Boy, by Oliver Jeffers

http://books4littleones.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-incredible-book-eating-boy-by.html

Sunday, 30 September 2012. The Incredible Book Eating Boy, by Oliver Jeffers. THE INCREDIBLE BOOK EATING BOY. All sorts of experts tell Henry that he must give up eating books. At first he feels sad, but then he picks up a half-eaten book and starts to read it. He enjoys it so much that he realises he could become the cleverest person in the world by reading book after book. So this is what he does, but every so often he can't resist nibbling the corner of a page. The Incredible Book Eating Boy.

Poetry for GCSE English: December 2009

http://poetryforgcseenglish.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

Poetry for GCSE English. Tuesday, 29 December 2009. The Eagle - Alfred Tennyson. The rhyming triplets used in each stanza give a feeling of harmony, where a creature is at one with its environment. The rhythm serves to reinforce this atmosphere. In the second and third lines of the first stanza, the stress falls on the first syllable – 'Close' and 'Ring'd' – again emphasising the eagle's position high up and in the centre of the sky. He clasps the crag with crooked hands;. And like a thunderbolt he falls.

Books for your little ones: October 2009

http://books4littleones.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Saturday, 31 October 2009. The Very Hungry Caterpillar. What would a picture book aimed at very young children need to encompass in order to achieve an enduring success? Should it be educational? Should it be colourful and cleverly designed? Should it lend itself well to reading aloud as well as appealing to young independent readers? Eric Carle's 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' combines all these elements, and in 2009 celebrates its fortieth anniversary. Thursday, 29 October 2009. The Kiss that Missed.

Books for your little ones: July 2010

http://books4littleones.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 14 July 2010. Clown, by Quentin Blake. My own experience of 'Clown' is with pre-school children, but I can see the book being used with children of primary-school age who could write their own text to accompany the pictures. I don't think they would find it too childish; in fact the humour would no doubt attract their interest. It could be an ideal resource for writing character descriptions and dialogue as well as narrative. Paperback, 32 pages. Red Fox, 1998. Sunday, 4 July 2010. Hedcuts in ...

http://books4littleones.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 30 September 2009. Slobbages and wampfish roes, courtesy of Dahl. Having recognised Quentin Blake's delightful style of drawing on the front cover, I was initially disappointed to find that he has not illustrated the whole book. I needn't have been, as there is a fantastic variety of styles from the twenty-six artists who have contributed, including Babette Cole and Gerald Scarfe. Blake has written the foreword and has provided drawings for the opening of each section. Section three deals with...

Books for your little ones: Watch out! Big Bro's Coming, by Jez Alborough

http://books4littleones.blogspot.com/2010/05/watch-out-big-bros-coming-by-jez.html

Sunday, 30 May 2010. Big Bro's Coming, by Jez Alborough. 8221; which really makes the animals jump. The story ends with Big Bro marching his little brother off home while the others remark that he really is rough and tough. Jez Alborough's “Watch out! Big Bro's Coming”. Rough, tough and chimpanzee may not be the easiest words to read, but there is enough repetition of sentences throughout the book to making reading the story not too challenging. It is hard to go wrong with Jez Alborough, and if you and y...

Books for your little ones: November 2009

http://books4littleones.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Saturday, 28 November 2009. The Scallywags - David Melling. I would say that 'The Scallywags' is a book that can appeal to boys or girls alike, and I'm sure most adults will enjoy reading it aloud and pointing out all the hilarious details in Melling's illustrations. I borrowed a copy from a library, but I think it is a book that will stand a few readings and therefore may be well worth buying. Hodder Children's Books, 2007. Paperback, 30 pages. Price £5.99 (Amazon £4.49). Thursday, 26 November 2009.

Liz eats Lille

Sunday, March 7, 2010. It's Sunday morning, 11:40 am. I'm speed-walking down the street toward Boulangerie Bèle, cutting my normal walking time from 15 minutes down to 10. Families pushing strollers down the street, those hyper-motivated Sunday morning runners, and old men sitting in front of their houses jet a glance at me and are probably wondering either one of two things: this girl is training for the 20km Racewalk for the 2012 Summer Olympics ( wha? Or she's on a mission. Posted by Mademoiselle Louie.
