Of Malt and Marrow

Of Malt and Marrow. A foray into all things homebrew. Saturday, December 14, 2013. Tasting - Solera 2013. I'll admit something without a problem - I am not the best brewer in the world. I'm good. Better than most. Surprising even to myself at times, but I am not the best. There are beers I make though that I could live with for the rest of my life. This seems like it is one of them. Problem is I only have 50-some-odd bottles left. Guess I'll enjoy it while it lasts. Thursday, December 12, 2013. Color was...

Of Malt and Marrow: July 2012

http://maltmarrow.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Of Malt and Marrow. A foray into all things homebrew. Sunday, July 22, 2012. My recipe is based on another fantastic recipe from The Perfect Pint - found HERE. Mine is a bit stronger, and I subbed the bittering hops because I had them readily available and in need of use. I'm in love with London III so I pitched that in. With warmer temps I might have a bit of a surprise waiting for me, but we'll see. Batch Size (Gal): 6. Total Grain (Lbs): 7.5. Anticipated OG: 1.051. Anticipated FG: 1.010. 1 oz - Cascad...

Of Malt and Marrow: March 2013

Of Malt and Marrow. A foray into all things homebrew. Friday, March 1, 2013. Needing to seriously keep up with this thing. If for no other reason than to have my recipes in cyberspace in case my hard drive crashes (again). I recently decided to brew something relatively simple for St. Paddy's (Thanks to the commenter Smarte). No green beer. No nitro stouts. Batch Size (Gal): 12. Total Grain (Lbs): 25. Anticipated OG: 1.056. Anticipated FG: 1.012. Boil Time: 60 Minutes. 2000 lbs. Golden Promise.

Of Malt and Marrow: November 2011

http://maltmarrow.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Of Malt and Marrow. A foray into all things homebrew. Tuesday, November 29, 2011. Younger's 60 Shilling Ale - 1868. One of the great things about beer is how much of the history of it is pure fantasy. We Americans tend to think we have invented beer and have improved in every way on what was done in years past. We also translate styles in weird ways. Take Scottish beers for example. What comes to mind? Malty, malty, malty. Why on earth do we think this? Because it is what is most commercially available.

Of Malt and Marrow: October 2011

http://maltmarrow.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Of Malt and Marrow. A foray into all things homebrew. Tuesday, October 11, 2011. King Sorachi Saison - Tasting. About time I start posting photos! I get impatient to start tasting whatever has been recently bottled just to see if it is any good. This is a particular problem when I find myself with only big beers in the cellar to drink. Being that my King Sorachi. Was fermented with the fast and voracious Wyeast French Saison yeast I figured it was time to try this. Drinkability and Notes - Clocking in at...

Of Malt and Marrow: January 2012

http://maltmarrow.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Of Malt and Marrow. A foray into all things homebrew. Saturday, January 14, 2012. Parti Time Brown Ale. Was experimentation at its finest. I had no idea what to expect. The only thing to guide us was the BJCP guidelines.which we only took as reference points. I still dont know what to classify this beer as, but I want more of it. Smell - Typical Brit phenols paired with coffee and chocolate and a bit of that woody hop aroma so prevalent in Willamate. Drinkability and notes - I'm digging this beer a lot&#...

An adventure in brewing, learning, and drinking better beer. Tuesday, January 10, 2012. Brew Day with New Mash Tun. Well, this was one hell of a brew day. Got to finally put my new mash tun to work by brewing a Belgian-style pale ale. I had mentioned the recipe in the past post, so check that out if you are interested in brewing something similar. Everything went smoothly, no issues. Actually, I take that back! Remove the plastic spigot that it comes with and go out and get yourself a kewler kit! Batch #...

An adventure in brewing, learning, and drinking better beer. Wednesday, December 7, 2011. Bottle Up / Tasting. Transferring the beer to the bottling bucket. This past Sunday I bottled my Citra Pale Ale. Really looking forward to this one. Smelled amazing and had great color. I only made around 3 gallons of this beer though, but it was a pretty simple recipe. If it turns out really good, I'll be brewing another batch. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Papa's Nut Brown Ale. Hop Will Eat Itself IPA.

An adventure in brewing, learning, and drinking better beer. Friday, January 6, 2012. Busy, Busy, Busy. I haven't had a chance to post lately because I have been out of town. I went up to Washington, D.C. and New York City to visit some friends. Got to try some amazing beers that I can't get here in Tennessee. We actually spent New Year's Eve in New York City, and somehow managed to avoid the chaos in and around Times Square. We got pretty close though! For 5 gallon batch -. 8 lbs Pilsner Malt. An adventure in brewing, learning, and drinking better beer. Friday, December 2, 2011. Brew Kettles - The Foundation of Any Good Boil. I placed an order today for a brand new 44 qt (11 gallon) stainless steel brew kettle! Pretty excited about this. I've currently been brewing on a standard 5 gallon brew pot. I figured that it was time to amp everything up. I'm also planning to build a mash tun in the next week or so. I'll post pictures once everything arrives. Boiling 5 gallons / Use 10 gallon brew kettle.
