Mark Aspinall Fly Fishing Guides. The back country streams and rivers open 1st October and close 30th April. October and November offer some dry fly and great nymph fishing to fish who have not seen an angler for 5 months. Many trophy fish are caught at this time of year and they are relaxing months to visit New Zealand. December, January, February, March, April. We pick you up at your accommodation or the airport. We provide any gear needed and lunch on full day trips. We supply licences if needed.

The following is our recommended list:. 9 ft graphite, 5 and 6 weight recommended - summer. 9 ft graphite, 6, 7 and 8 weight recommended - winter. Natural colours are best for summer fishing e.g. spring creek green. Line colour for winter not so important. 3X and 4X 9 ft tapered leaders. 3X and 4X tippet. Polaroid glasses - amber is best. Insect repellent and suntan lotion SPF 15 -30.

Mark Aspinall Fly Fishing Guides. In the winter months (April to October) the trout of Lake Taupo run up the tributary streams on their spawning runs. This is what made Taupo fishing famous, a well kept secret within New Zealand and Australia. Expect to catch mainly Rainbow Trout with a few Browns; averaging 4 to 5 pounds with a number over the 8 pound mark, all prime condition fish. Access to these rivers is by 4X4 and raft only in the Upper Tongariro.
