Monday, January 26, 2009. This day marks the beginning of what will hopefully be a turn-around in our nation's energy direction. California is the 8th largest economy in the world, with commensurate energy usage. Governor Schwarzenegger ( a Republican, no less! Has an ambitious plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in California to fight global warming and strengthen the state's economy. Some say (including myself) hurray for some progress! Last week I had an interesting problem - how to sync two directories on two different servers in an automated and secured fashion. I remembered Hal using the rsync command to do this once before. A 5 minute Google search turned up exactly what I needed. Rsync -ave ssh - delete server1:/foo /foo-copy. The command above includes the - delete option, which will delete.

Digital's Analog: April 2009

Sunday, April 05, 2009. If you were a meteorologist, how much seriousness would you treat a 10% chance of rain, versus a 10% chance of a category 5 hurricane? If you would agree that even a 10% chance of a cat 5 hurricane should be taken seriously, how about a 10% chance of cataclysmic global warming? What level of warning should be promulgated to the public? Listen to a podcast. Of the lecture and ponder these and other questions. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Sunday, November 09, 2008. Globalization's Have and Have-Nots. I've been listening to a podcast lecture by Michael Goldman, an Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota, entitled "Social Justice and Prosperity in a World City? Adding to my growing sense of doubt, this lecture paints a picture that people in other nations are displaced as well in this process. Podcast link to the lecture:. Digital's Analog: A World without Windows?

Tuesday, February 10, 2009. A World without Windows? This double-whammy, combined with lackluster public response to Windows Vista, has changed Microsoft's fortunes in the desktop operating system arena. What does this mean for consumers? More innovation from Microsoft as they try to regain their lead, and more choices as alternatives such as Linux increase in popularity. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Follow me on Twitter. Sunday, August 24, 2008. Civilization Stops at 500 meters. Listened to an interesting lecture by Professor James Scott. Questions that come to mind about this idea - what percentage of upland peoples did in fact originate from mainland areas, or did mainland peoples move to the uplands and become assimilated into existing cultures? There is probably no way to determine answers to those questions, except perhaps through genetic testing. What does the future hold for such groups? Links to this post. Like a...
