What should I monitor?

https://matschaffer.com/2015/01/what-to-monitor

What should I monitor? It’s an old question. And one that can vary quite a bit from domain to domain. But for Web Operations there are some definite patterns I’ve come across. Most of these come from the last two years I spent working as a Reliability Engineer at Netflix. Even though we had hundreds of discrete applications when something broke you often found yourself looking at similar sets of metrics. So without further ado, here they are, broken down per category and in a roughly-prioritized order.

Rethinking My Kanban Board

https://matschaffer.com/2014/06/rethinking-kanban

Rethinking My Kanban Board. If you’ve ever used Trello, Jira, or other kanban board tools you may be used to seeing a board that looks like this:. Note: The ticket names have been changed to protect the innocent. Here we have a typical 3-column layout; To Do, Doing, and Done. Our three available dimensions represent the following:. Color: Logical track of work. There are only a few colors to work with, so you can run out on complex projects. How would I know what the status of a ticket was? Here the hori...

It's war out there. Get yourself a sub.

https://matschaffer.com/2014/12/sub-command

Its war out there. Get yourself a sub. When I started at Netflix almost two years ago, one of the first things that occured to me was We could really use a general helper command. Other developers even agreed that it could be handy. I recalled Nick Quaranto’s handy sub. Repository but with Netflix being a Java shop, I wasn’t sure about introducing something that required a bash environment. A few months passed while I tinkered with doing something in Groovy. Then during one of our hack days. Just providi...

Rebooting

https://matschaffer.com/2013/09/rebooting

So what happened last year? I taught Rails at UPenn. I taught a full year of CIS196 at UPenn. Being an adjunct teacher was. And highly recommended to anyone interested. The skills I learned on presenting, course organization and mentoring keep coming in handy again and again. I took a full-time job at Netflix. I moved to San Jose. This was a prerequisite for the new job. But honestly it’s like Hollywood for programmers out here and the weather is jaw-droppingly amazing. I rebooted this blog. Just submit ...

Thoughts on Scalability

https://matschaffer.com/2013/09/scalability

I spent the last two years doing deployment automation work and helping startups build Rails applications at Mashion. It was great fun but rarely put me in the path of high-scale customer traffic. Getting close to that traffic was a big factor in my decision to move west and help run one of the largest installations on the internet. Backward compatibility on all fronts. I hope rich-client applications push the needle on this one since you need to address the possibility of an unrefreshed browser session ...

Simplex for Ruby - Daniel Lucraft

http://danlucraft.com/blog/2013/12/ann-simplex-for-ruby

I’ve released a pure-Ruby implementation of the Simplex algorithm. For solving linear problems. It may be useful to you if you can only run Ruby, or if you want to learn about the Simplex algorithm from a simple implementation. I really really didn’t want to write my own LP solver implementation. If someone else told me they had done this, I would smirk. It’s a notoriously hard algorithm to implement correctly. Have you tried compiling them on Heroku. For Ruby 2.0. Max x y 2x y = 4 x 2y = 3 x, y = 0.

Learning about Redis through writing a Twitter clone - Daniel Lucraft

http://danlucraft.com/blog/2009/05/learning-about-redis-through-writing-a-twitter-clone

Learning about Redis through writing a Twitter clone. Is a fast key-value database by Salvatore Sanfilippo. With some new ideas. Sometimes it’s called a ‘data-structures database’ because it supports sets and lists. I spent a few hours this morning writing a Twitter clone that uses Redis as its datastore, which is now online at http:/ retwisrb.danlucraft.com. The code is available on Github. Requires list traversal by Redis. Would they be useful? Anyway, I encourage you to try Redis out soon.

How to use the new JRuby profiler - Daniel Lucraft

http://danlucraft.com/blog/2011/03/built-in-profiler-in-jruby-1.6

How to use the new JRuby profiler. The JRuby team released version 1.6. Yesterday, with lots of improvements and fixes. My contribution was extending the profiler with a graph mode and a Ruby API (with a lot of help from Headius. This profiler is built-in to the JRuby interpreter, no installation necessary! JRuby 1.5 included the. Option, which profiles all Ruby code run during the JRuby execution and outputs a flat profile:. In 160 there is now an additional profiling flag. How to profile blocks of code.

Terraframe: Making HashiCorp’s Terraform Awesome

And do some other stuff too, sometimes. Terraframe: Making HashiCorp’s Terraform Awesome. January 10, 2015 — 5:04 AM UTC. Is a cool infrastructure-as-code system with a boatload of functionality. It makes building out entire clouds on AWS. Super easy and super fun. I am a fan. I started my new job as Lead Platform Engineer at Leaf. And I was really happy to have the chance to use Terraform in a greenfield project where I could play with it. But I wasn’t happy with it, and so I’ve done a thing. Doing this...

App ID struggle | App Mecha

https://appmecha.wordpress.com/2009/10/24/app-id-struggle

A focus on Web applications, in particular Google App Engine. I just tried for 10 minutes to get an unused application identifier that would make sense for the new example app. Adding insult to injury, every single supposedly taken ID I tried to access via the appID .appspot.com URL was a 404. Perhaps there is a bit of squatting going on? Yeah you can map to domain name, but it makes writing tutorials that much more of a pain😉. Designing cu3w0rx →. 3 Responses to “App ID struggle”.

Platform Poll Results | App Mecha

https://appmecha.wordpress.com/2008/11/14/platform-poll-results

A focus on Web applications, in particular Google App Engine. So we got a whopping total of 9 votes (and one “other” that gave no alternate answer). Predictably the top answer was Java (60%) with Ruby running second (30%) . On the surface this makes sense, since there is a well-established developer community and Google itself uses Java for a lot of their projects.
