At summer's end, I traveled north, / crossed the sea, to the salted rim of the Arctic." So writes the poet Mark Wunderlich about his pilgrimage to Iceland. He "breakfasted on liver paste." He saw the "spidery manuscripts chilled under glass.". In Song of the Vikings. Shortly after Song of the Vikings. Earlier this year, Mark Wunderlich's collection The Earth Avails.

https://nancymariebrown.blogspot.com/2015/07/iceland-rocks.html
Wanderer and storyteller, wise, half-blind, with a wonderful horse. Wednesday, July 15, 2015. As I was preparing for my 20th trip to Iceland- where I am now- this map of the country surfaced on my Facebook feed. On my trips around Iceland over the last years, I . have collected one rock at each location where I've caught a photo I've been really pleased with," wrote Snorri Þór Tryggvason of Iceland Aurora Films. It's against the law, she repeated, and glared. Iceland has a million tourists a year....
God of Wednesday: Iceland's Deserts
https://nancymariebrown.blogspot.com/2015/08/icelands-deserts.html
Wanderer and storyteller, wise, half-blind, with a wonderful horse. Wednesday, August 5, 2015. There's a difference between a natural desert and a manmade desert," Magnus said as we crossed an imaginary line in the sand on our way to the hot spring area Landmannalaugar. Out of Hella, in Iceland's south, I realized my perception of Iceland's beauty was rather romantic- and more than a little bit skewed. Iceland's soil conservation service. Apparently, I wasn't paying attention. Twice in the 1990s, while t...

God of Wednesday: Saga vs Novel
https://nancymariebrown.blogspot.com/2015/05/saga-vs-novel.html
Wanderer and storyteller, wise, half-blind, with a wonderful horse. Wednesday, May 20, 2015. Juxtaposition is one of my favorite words. So I was understandably thrilled when a 2014 essay by Ben Yagoda in Slate, complaining "Does Novel Now Mean Any Book? Crossed my (virtual) desk at the same time as a 2002 academic paper by Torfi Tulinius of the University of Iceland called " Egils Saga. And the Novel.". What is a novel? I admit that "fictional novel" is one phrase that makes me cringe. That's especially ...

Bruce Macbain: Why do I write about Vikings? Prince Valiant in the Golden Age of Comics
http://brucemacbain.blogspot.com/2015/04/why-do-i-write-about-vikings-prince.html
Sunday, April 12, 2015. Why do I write about Vikings? Prince Valiant in the Golden Age of Comics. I was trained as a Classicist, my two previous novels are set in ancient Rome, I love the Mediterranean, I hate ice and snow and suffer through Boston winters with gritted teeth. How then do I happen to be writing about Viking Age Iceland in my latest novel, Odin's Child. It all goes back to Prince Valiant in the Days of King Arthur,. That wonderful comic strip written and drawn by Hal Foster. Foster was an ...
Bruce Macbain: Odin lives!: heathenism today
http://brucemacbain.blogspot.com/2015/05/odin-lives-heathenism-today.html
Friday, May 29, 2015. At the beginning of Odin’s Child. Odd Tangle-Hair, the story’s narrator, tells us how Iceland adopted Christianity in the year one thousand. To avoid civil war between believers in the old religion and the new Christian converts, it was decided at the Althing that. Year that one respected old chieftain would decide for all, and his decision would be binding on all. The doom of the gods—in a howling torrent of words. My mother believed in him, and she was a good woman. Not quite, it ...

http://brucemacbain.blogspot.com/2015/07/need-advice-ask-viking.html
Saturday, July 4, 2015. In Odin’s Child. Kalf went to embrace him, but Hoskuld held him at arm's length and bent his brows sternly. Now Kalf, you must promise. Me Stay with Odd. Never. Yes, Grandfather, yes," Slender-Leg answered impatiently to all this preachy stuff. Hoskuld’s lecture is inspired by a collection of verses called the Havamal. Or The Sayings of the High One. Is just one part of a larger work, the Poetic Edda. On the contrary, the Havamal. If you follow me on. Don’t hold onto the cup...

God of Wednesday
Wanderer and storyteller, wise, half-blind, with a wonderful horse. Wednesday, February 8, 2017. Iceland and the Vikings. Each year I lead a week-long tour to West Iceland called "Sagas and Vikings." So I took it personally when an article. The English language website of Iceland's newspaper Morgunblaðið. Called it "exaggerated or distorted" to speak about Vikings in Iceland. What does "Viking" mean? And raiding was not the sole defining characteristic of the age: Exploration was just as significant.
