Gurukula is a Sanskrit word meaning family of the Guru). Our purpose is to provide a contemplative community for the study of the wisdom teachings of East and West. We respect both independent study and the Upanishadic tradition of teaching, that is, sitting at the feet of a master. The Gurukula was established by Narayana Guru's successor, Nataraja Guru, born 1895. Each family branch is more or less autonomous, and refers directly to the Guru, in the Upanishadic tradition, and not to any organization.
