The PKD android was an engineering project that involved robotics as well as artificial intelligence, theatre design, art, and studies of human-machine interaction. Hopefully the project has stimulated interest in science, technology, and robotics in the wider population. Robotics is a rapidly advancing field. Robots have already transformed our society in many ways:. Robots can do manual, repetitive jobs much faster and more efficiently than humans. Cool robot of the week. Origin of the word robot.

A large number of people and organisations made the Philip K Dick android a reality. The original idea and vision came from David Hanson. David Hanson also built the head, painstakingly recreating the likeness of the late science fiction author from photographs, and turning that sculpture into a robotic head with motors and levers that could be controlled remotely. Hanson also built a poseable body so that the android looked like a complete human. Why Philip K Dick? FedEx Institute of Technology.

Why Philip K Dick? Why build a robotic portrait of Philip K Dick? To some, the choice to build an android of science fiction writer Philip K Dick seems rather arbitrary. It’s true that Philip K Dick wrote about robots, and therefore it is a homage to a visionary thinker and writer to make a robot in his image, in the same way that a modern plane might be named after the Wright brothers or some other pioneer of aviation. For example, in. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? The main character is on a miss...

The idea of building a robotic likeness of the science fiction writer Philip K Dick arose in 2004 when David Hanson visited Memphis to give a public exhibition of his latest robot at the time, Eva. An android is a robot in human form. The goal was to push the boundaries of what could be done with existing technology to create a synthesis of science, art, and engineering. The ARRI robotics lab in Texas helped, particularly with providing quality engineered parts and servomotors. The robot was fully autono...
