Have come to represent the definition of a computation and underpin the most basic architecture of modern computers. The Turing machine was developed in response to Hilbert's tenth problem (the Entscheidungsproblem) which enquired as to the existence of a general algorithmic procedure for solving mathematical problems. Model and the Multiple Drafts. A Turing machin...

A statistical analysis will show that:. A is followed by another A(33%) or B(66%). B is always followed by an A(100%). We can refine this by looking at longer histories:. AA is followed by A(40%) or B(60%). AB is followed by A(100%). BA is followed by A(33%) or B(66%). BB never occurs in the sample. S2 AA predicts A(40%) or B(60%).

You re-establish your moon prediction business in a distant and much larger town. However, your transported system seems not to work quite so well in these distant parts but you can think of no way of updating it other that starting again. You keep the new set of menhirs safely indoors with their paths mapped ...

Paths, stones and hermits: part I. Paths, stones and hermits: part II. Posted 16 Feb 2012, 15:41. By John Brown [ updated 13 Mar 2012, 19:43. The Engineering discipline gains tremendous power by taking a reductionist, modular approach. Complex engineering problems are recursively broken down into smaller and smaller component problems with well defined interfaces. Each of the small component problems are solved in turn, and then they are all "bolted" back together into the engineering solution. There has...

There would appear to be various types of intelligence and various levels of intelligence. We call ourselves Homo sapiens - man the wise - because our mental capacities are so important to us. It seems remarkable then, that there is no generally agreed definition of intelligence. In any case, there is a conceiv...

The survival advantage gained by organisms with brains is the ability to exploit time. The ability to predict the future in terms of resources and dangers, and to act pre-emptively. Clearly species that developed brains gained a significant survival advantage. If brains are about intelligence. Then this assumption leads to a natural definition. Or an organism that ...
