Not My Typewriter: Artist Profile: gosia
http://www.notmytypewriter.com/2011/08/artist-profile-gosia.html
A Book Lover in #HamOnt. Wednesday, 3 August 2011. As a child, my favourite stories were dark and even a little frightening, especially when it came to fairy tales. One of my favourites was. But not the film version where she weds her prince. Instead, I reread this version. Over and over again, reliving her tragic return to the sea. This pull continues today when I see wonderfully gloomy. I instantly fell in love with this Little Red, the focal point of a piece by Toronto-based artist gosia. I really app...

A Book Lover in #HamOnt. Living Arts: I Read Banned Books. Wednesday, 18 February 2015. This post originally appeared as part of the Hamilton Arts Council's LivingArts series. I can't remember exactly how old I was the first time I read To Kill a Mockingbird. To Kill a Mockingbird. Has been challenged in schools and libraries repeatedly for five decades. Freedom to Read Week. Is just around the corner, taking place this year between February 22-28. The annual event "encourages Canadians to think abou...
Not My Typewriter: Hamilton Haunts: Quills

A Book Lover in #HamOnt. Wednesday, 5 August 2015. The Paper Trail Diary. Explores books, zines, crafts, and letter writing, so it's an obvious choice to be among my favourite blogs. When Jessica, the awesomeness behind The Paper Trail Diary. Announced she was looking for people to highlight stationery stores around the world, I jumped on the opportunity to sing the praises of one of my favourite haunts — Quills. And while you're at it, get in touch with her to give your own virtual tour. Were known as a...
Not My Typewriter: January 2015
http://www.notmytypewriter.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
A Book Lover in #HamOnt. Tuesday, 27 January 2015. This post originally appeared on the Hamilton Arts Council's LivingArts Blog. I learned a new word over the holidays. Tsundoku. Is a Japanese noun meaning "leaving a book unread after buying it, typically piled together with other unread books." It's a stunning word, and it, briefly, prompted a New Year's Resolution. This seemed like an obvious resolution - for about five seconds. What writers need is support from their local community, meaning a morator...
Not My Typewriter: Cask Days
http://www.notmytypewriter.com/2013/10/cask-days.html
A Book Lover in #HamOnt. Sunday, 20 October 2013. Yesterday, I found my beer soul mate. It may not have been the beer everybody loved the most. It may not have been the one everybody was lining up to try. But it was perfect for me. And it was love at first swig. As soon as I had my first taste of the Saw Dust City Smoked Pumpkin, I knew it was love. It was the beer I've waited my entire (drinking) life to find. Pin Images to Pinterest. 20 October 2013 at 16:38. When I lived in Pennsylvania there was a gr...

Ottawish: November 2011
http://ottawish.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
One Newfoundland ex-pat living in Ottawa. I'm a writer (apparently). Wednesday, November 23, 2011. Today I woke up and there was snow, layered, rising, and I thought "not today". I made four different phone calls to say we weren't leaving. Wee man and I had popcorn for lunch and watched Elmo. Cuddled in our blanket. I tried not to think about the money I was costing us by deciding to stay in. Wednesday, November 16, 2011. Day in the Life. 5:00 am: "Is Little Fella awake? Is he going to wake up? New moist...

One Newfoundland ex-pat living in Ottawa. I'm a writer (apparently). Saturday, October 13, 2012. I would like more dancing to happen. I've been listening to some new albums and I feel like one song in particular has crawled into my bones. I wish I had more time to practice. This writing program has completely taken over my life, which I love and has been so great, but I still ache for other things. Ah, well. Short term pain, long term gain and all that. Ottawish: January 2012
http://ottawish.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
One Newfoundland ex-pat living in Ottawa. I'm a writer (apparently). Monday, January 30, 2012. I am in a grumpy mood. Just let me say this, I have been working at my new hospital since September and I still feel like I don't belong. I miss the girls who used to laugh and draw silly pictures and call each other "Peach.". There are no "Peaches" or "Loves" or "Duckies" here. I used to work 50 hours a week and didn't mind it all that much. Now I'm working 10 hours a week and it's lonely. One of those days.

One Newfoundland ex-pat living in Ottawa. I'm a writer (apparently). Friday, June 22, 2012. I'm supposed to be writing an article - instead, I've decided to download Irish music to make myself homesick. Ya know. The Irish, they get longing. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Ottawish: September 2011
http://ottawish.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html
One Newfoundland ex-pat living in Ottawa. I'm a writer (apparently). Saturday, September 24, 2011. Before I left Newfoundland, I had a distant relative who moved to the St.John's for the first time. I've never met her, but my uncle asked that I add her to Facebook so that she'd know someone in the city. I did, and she spent nearly every day complaining about how awful Newfoundland was and how much she hated it there. So, I'm trying to give it a chance. It still makes sense to me. Other than that, we're s...
Ottawish: May 2012
http://ottawish.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
One Newfoundland ex-pat living in Ottawa. I'm a writer (apparently). Wednesday, May 9, 2012. I've never had live flowers in or around my place. Between the basement apartments, struggling university lifestyle and general short-seasoned-ness of Newfoundland, it's just never happened. A few months ago I noticed a hook outside our balcony door. "We're getting a basket of flowers", I said. Blood ran down from left middle finger. Yes I'll get it, let's go." and I kicked the pylon aside. Last night, while we w...
Ode to the Book Blog | zimmy

Reading and reading and the occasional dinosaur. Ode to the Book Blog. Posted on August 23, 2011. Full of opinions, imperviousness, dry summaries, stupor, and always surprises (but never quite enough irreverence). A quick list of what I’ve found, will probably review and made omission decisions at a later date:. NPR’s book blog. Lots of contributors, varied content, starts with a comic artist and writer! The American Book Review lists its issue contents. To Lovers and Other Strangers. A Work in Progress.

One Newfoundland ex-pat living in Ottawa. I'm a writer (apparently). Wednesday, June 27, 2012. A day late, but here she be. Some details have been changed to preserve anonymity. Our plane banked towards the farmland knitted below, "We'll be in our new home soon.". I was surprised at the amount of pasture so close to the city; Ottawa. A far cry from Newfoundland, the origin of our journey. The weight of our angled approach pushed me into my window while my son squirmed uncomfortably on my lap. I led the p...
Ottawish: October 2011
http://ottawish.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
One Newfoundland ex-pat living in Ottawa. I'm a writer (apparently). Thursday, October 20, 2011. The Fellas have flown back to Newfoundland for the weekend - Mr.Fella is "crossing the stage" for his Masters and he brought the little man with him. I couldn't go because I was unable to get the time off work (one of the down-sides of working with very few co-workers - no one to cover for you.). I'm normally a pretty independent person, and for the longest while I thought "awesome! Wednesday, October 5, 2011.

WE wear the mask that grins and lies,. It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,. This debt we pay to human guile;. With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,. And mouth with myriad subtleties. Why should the world be over-wise,. In counting all our tears and sighs? Nay, let them only see us, while. We wear the mask.

Books I love, books I hate. Rarely anything in between. It's a good book, but it's not my. Monday, October 10, 2016. Disgraced, Ayad Akhtar. If you're looking for a play that may offend EVERYONE, this is it. Brutally honest about the way people view themselves and other races and religions, Disgraced. A Book Lover in #HamOnt. Favourite Reads of 2017. Sunday, 7 January 2018. In no particular order, here are the books that floored me, caused me to take pause, or entertained me in 2017. They are books that I dog-earred, wrote in the margins of (unless they were library books, obviously), and, in many cases, reviewed either here or elsewhere. I recommend each of them without hesitation. Birds Art Life by Kyo Maclear. To read my review of Birds Art Life, click here. Here's a snippet of it:. Is hardly a man...

Despite a stack of review copies and non-fiction selections from the library weighing down my coffee table, I decided on some smutty young adult fiction (a favourite genre! I wanted something I could read not only beside the pool, but also. The pool, without feeling guilty for soaking the pages with sopping fingerprints and spilled beer. I settled on. Which is #13 in Francine Pascal’s Sweet Valley High series. Which I picked up for .50 at a used-book shop on College Street in Toronto. Was completely pred...
