Spinning things and more!

Saturday, August 9, 2014. Sending data over IR with a PIC: the DAC method. Alright, so I had what I thought was a relatively mundane problem: I wanted to send data over IR with a PIC I'm using (specifically, a PIC12LF1572). Should be simple, right? This write-up will assume some basic familiarity with microcontrollers (PICs especially) and so I'm not going to spend any time going over the basics like PWM/interrupts/etc. So, why's this an interesting problem? Original data with modulated signal. Use the D...

Spinning things and more!: I'm back - let's write some assembly!

http://www.omgitgoes.blogspot.com/2014/01/im-back-lets-write-some-assembly.html

Saturday, January 18, 2014. I'm back - let's write some assembly! It's been a while. I'll go ahead and explain where I've been, and then talk about some stuff I've been working on recently. I stopped posting before the start of last summer, where I got to intern at a really cool company called Freefly. I also have a video from early in the summer, just after I got my license. I'm wearing all black with a black helmet and a navy blue parachute with red highlights:. Back down onto the treadmill. Since ...

Sunday, March 10, 2013. The Long Overdue Go-kart Post: The Birth of SmartKart. So, I'm probably going to have to give a little bit of background on this one. 2.007. Is one of the primary design/build courses for MIT mechanical engineering undergrads, and also served to inspire tons of other robotic competitions across the globe (eg FIRST. For my 2-A degree, I'd inadvertently rendered 2.007 no longer necessary for me to graduate. Additionally, by the time I got to the point where I'd be taking 2&#...More ...

Spinning things and more!: Audible Altimeter part 1

http://www.omgitgoes.blogspot.com/2014/03/audible-altimeter-part-1.html

Sunday, March 2, 2014. Audible Altimeter part 1. I was looking for a new electronics project to work on, and found some inspiration in the skydiving world. While you're in freefall, it's absolutely critical to know what altitude you're at, so you can know when to safely pull your parachute. Skydivers wear something along the lines of this. It's definitely an interesting project because everything has to be made as small and low-power as possible, in order to have it be completely portable and so that you...

make everything: December 2013

http://totallyharmless.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, December 25, 2013. After much wishing I had some hardy tools. I made some hardy tools.  These tools fit in the square hole in an anvil.  Hole sizes are nonstandard, so its often worthwhile to make your own.  Smiths typically make their own tools anyway. Monday, February 18, 2013. 160;The carbon fiber foam laminate broke in a place where it had already been weakened by holes. I heard from Josh. That hed been working on kites. Josh flies the kite that he and laura made (2.3m nasa para wing). A few more hooked knives. Sunday, February 17, 2013. Wood things, rolling things. I slept a whole lot this IAP.  While I wasnt sleeping, I got a few things done. . Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). A few more hooked knives. Wood things, rolling things.

http://totallyharmless.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 28, 2013. Huge Kite (10.9 M 2 Nasa Para Wing). Muffin and Me just finished sewing up our enormous kite. Its a scaled up version of the one. He had made before. Last Summer, I hastily cut a tricopter frame from carbon fiber foam laminate.  The stock Id found wasnt large enough to make the whole thing, so I attached the arms with 4-40 nylon cap screws. Wednesday, April 10, 2013. I cut out some roof panels for the yurt after doing some (very) approximate trig. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

http://totallyharmless.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 15, 2013. I took one of the big project classes in Course II (mechE) this semester, 2.007.  2.007 is Design and Manufacturing I.  The class is interesting because it attempts to teach you how to design and build mechanical things, in a semester. In which students build robots to compete. In various tasks requiring clever mechanisms, dexterity, and programming skill.  The other sections offered in SP2013 were underwater robotics (led by Ed Moriarty and TAd by djwise.

Saturday, November 30, 2013. Summer at Sandhill Farm, Rutledge MO. This post has been a long time coming.  Guess Ive got some phase lag to deal with. I never did set up an engineering job for this summer.  Instead, I worked at Sandhill Farm. Front to back: echinacea, green beans, and salad greens. Monday, November 25, 2013. Kitelandboard part two: the saga continues. I debated for a while whether it was worth bending up the ends to give the trucks the necessary angle, or if I should just leave the deck f...

Friday, April 29, 2011. This class has made me realize that I will never be comfortable with public speaking. Even with the small amount of people in the room, I was still quite nervous.
