I bought pretty cheap wood (still not particle board; that stuff’s total crap) because I was going to paint it and because it’s only ever going to hold a couple pairs of shoes, and even my husband’s feet aren’t big enough to cause problems there. The key though is to make sure the wood is thick enough to be able to pound nails through the width of it without splitting.
