Roper's High Sierra Route - Section 1. Roper's Sierra High Route. Is a worthy alternative to the John Muir Freeway. Linking slightly different destinations, the the SHR seldom drops below 10,000' while the JMT occasionally strays several miles from the Sierra Crest. Slide show 1 - Pre-ride to Pine Mountain. We like to start at Lagunitas Creek within S.P. Taylor state park. And head southeast, upstream to the Kent Reservoir Dam, then up a steep grade to San Geronimo ridge (with lots of ups and downs) which tops out at Green Hill (! 800') From there, we pass through a rugged area of serpentine, forested with low Sargent Cypress to the saddle betweem San Geronimo Ridge and Pine Mtn. Boggs Mtn. Oat Hill Mine Trail, Calistoga - October 2002. As we were leaving for Calistoga on Sunday, we were on hand for a helicopter launch. On the CDF's heliport. We said goodbye to our campground neighbor Tim. And headed south. We finally found the trailhead for the Oat Hill Mine Road and started around 11am. It was a hot Indian summer day and there was little relief the entire way up. The trail. Toward the Pallisades up one of their lateral spurs. The trail got increasingly rocky. Or just walk it.
