How do I write a sermon? Part 5: the writing process itself. Part 5: The Writing Process. Part of an occasional series about the nuts and bolts of church work. I’m always interested in learning more about how people work, write, and create. I offer the following up in the hope that it inspires your own preaching efforts, or at least is marginally helpful. Step 9: the opening words. For example, for this sermon, the words I began with were the following:. So, places, places matter. I write like I speak...

A Copy of this month's sermon:Beyond Basic Gardening. So, places, places matter. Some places matter more than others; just a small observation. My wife and I were watching a dvd the other night; one that had the commercials for other movies coming out. And, it dawned on me, thinking about Jacob resting his head on that pillow that you can tell a lot about a story based on the place. So, the previews and their places. Stalingrad? Betting not too peaceful. Pompei? Betting it doesn’t end well? But, this was...

Who is Pastor Jeremiah? - Pastor Jeremiah
http://www.revjeremiahrood.com/blog/who-is-pastor-jeremiah
Who is Pastor Jeremiah? A friend in ministry, once asked me of a congregation I was serving, “have you ever really told them your story? Since, we’re in stewardship season now; it seems fitting to offer some of how I have lived these years God has given me. If only, because, I think, if I were you, I might like to know a little more about this guy who came last September. Into all this expectation: here goes. Our family plowed, hayed, and tended that little plot of land for generations. Not much of inter...

The world has changed. I was just reading one of those job hunting books. This one about finding a certain parachute. This one is updated yearly; I tend to read it each year if only for the author’s take on how the world of work is looking. And, this year, like the past few, he states, “the world has changed.”. Not much fun, but still true. One that I really enjoy is the Northampton Forbes Library. It also has some coed bathrooms, which it being Northampton you would sort of expect. I tell you this, not ...

Off to NaNoMo - Pastor Jeremiah
http://www.revjeremiahrood.com/blog/off-to-nanomo
This month, dear reader, I'm taking a brief break from these weekly updates to work on a new novel that's been kicking around in my brain. I'll try to post occasional updates, but suspect my writing brain will be tired from all the exercise required to write 50,000 words in 30 days. For those unfamiliar with the practice here's a link: http:/ nanowrimo.org/. So, dear readers, wish me luck! In Church This Morning. Create a free website. Create your own free website. The Great Church Pivot Point - Pastor Jeremiah
http://www.revjeremiahrood.com/blog/the-great-church-pivot-point
The Great Church Pivot Point. Here it is: the pivot we are all facing. As Church, we are in a place where the magic words have failed. The plans we made don’t match the geography we are living in. And, the hopes we had, where we placed our faith, might not be the plans God has for us. Makes no difference what denomination, creed, or congregation you belong to. This is the pivot. I don’t really have one. The best I can do is offer what I did in a previous post: Notice. Love. And Let Go. And We Let Go.
Ministerial Perspective: Pioneer Valley Homelessness - Pastor Jeremiah
http://www.revjeremiahrood.com/blog/ministerial-perspective-pioneer-valley-homelessness
Ministerial Perspective: Pioneer Valley Homelessness. Sad commentary that "homeless" had three choices. Image from MS Word. First of an occasional series of long pieces, white papers, about pressing topics of ministerial concern. From a ministerial perspective, the problem, on the ground, often comes as one of discernment. My proposal is to tailor traditional Christian spiritual discernment practices to help better inform decision making processes around this issue. For many, the Pioneer Valley has been ...
Emptying Spirit: A Pioneer Valley Reflection - Pastor Jeremiah
http://www.revjeremiahrood.com/blog/emptying-spirit-a-pioneer-valley-reflection
Emptying Spirit: A Pioneer Valley Reflection. Sitting here on Labor Day: I realize that I have never been able to see the parking lot across from me empty before. It’s usually overflowing with cars looking for takeout from Mesa Verde. It’s Labor Day in the Pioneer Valley and I’m stuck working. There is something calming about how the blue of the sky hugs the orange siding and the exposed brick of the building next door. Sitting here, watching the day slowly turn from hot afternoon to more shadows and thr...

Pastor's Spouse
Monday, May 8, 2017. May 7, 2017. 8220;Bread and Prayers”. Writing in the book of Acts, Luke paints a picture of church life and church growth that is the envy of many a congregation. Study a little; eat a little; pray a little; share your stuff with each other. “. And day by day the Lord added to their number.”. Sounds like a bunch of happy socialists living in a commune or perhaps a kibbutz. Maybe it’s not so easy after all. They lived in unity with one another and with the Lord. In fact in his great p...

My Thoughts
Tuesday, May 13, 2014. We are told to “pray without ceasing.” It is the air we breathe. But that will cease to be the case if there are no disciplined times set aside for prayer and a plan to keep them…A husband who says he never has special times alone with his wife because the daily air is charged with intimacy will not long breath that air. Many of you remember the days of only three channels on television, having to use a “rabbit ear” antenna to get a signal and no such thing as a VCR! One of the big...
