東北側由海拔1000公尺左右的大屯山系組成;西南側為平坦的關渡平原,以基隆河跟士林區社子島為界;東南側以磺溪與 士林區之陽明山 、天母為. 原為平埔族中的凱達格蘭族(Ketagalan)部落居住的地方,而北投即為凱達格蘭族的女巫的住所;清初漢人前來開墾,稱Pataauw為北投或(北頭 、八頭)。 石牌因有榮民總醫院、台北護校,而成人人所知之地,而目前所稱的 大石牌 則併入了. 一七二0年代,有漳州人賴、魏、謝三姓來此開拓,因侵佔番民土地,時起紛爭。 一七五二年,淡水同知曾日瑛,為解決其糾紛,乃立碑劃分漢番持業地區界限。 碑文為 奉憲分府曾批斷東/南勢田/園歸番管業界 ,其界碑立了幾塊無確考據。 一九一九年 台北廳志 記存有兩塊,一在 石碑莊 ,一在 磺溪莊 ,石碑莊原於石牌火車站右前方, 可能即今北投新公園碑林中的哪一塊,而磺溪莊的界碑,本於石牌派山所,現於石牌捷運站。

溫泉由硫磺而來,清時為製造火藥之用 ; 一八九四年,德籍硫磺商人奧里發現了此處的溫泉。 一八九六年,日本商人平田源吉認為其具有觀光、商業價值,投資了 天狗庵旅舍 ,此為北投溫泉的濫觴. 三面環山,溫泉環湧的北投,有 磺泉玉霧 、 梵剎鐘聲 、 北投夜色 三大勝景;曾名登台灣八景十二勝,四大溫泉榜首。 原為自然形成的 湯瀧浴場 之一部份,於明治40年 台灣婦人慈善會 推動改良 湯瀧浴場 後所建,是北投目前所存古 老,也是僅存的日式、不兼餐食與住宿的 純浴場。 原為日據時代軍方專用溫泉招待所,是北投古老泡的泡湯場所之一,有27間客房,具日式建築風格,幽雅寧靜, 懷舊氣氛濃厚。 酸性綠礬泉,不可肥皂洗身,ph值約一點六,屬強酸類,對建物及金屬腐蝕性強.
