But going back more than a century, a number of thefts from the 19th and early 20th century shows that the place was vulnerable. One of the most notable thefts was an inside job when an long time employee stole more than $130,000. Henry Cochran of Darby, Pa. stole gold bars from the Philadelphia mint in 1893.
