The Magnelephant Review: November 2011
http://magnelephant.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Saturday, November 5, 2011. Home Cinema Doesn't Exist. God bless you, Anthony Lane. And by God, I mean one of those black and white Bergman numbers where heaven is strawberries or some such. He also has some very funny, Freudian things to say about Brett Ratner's Tower Heist. It is the New Yorker, after all. And tower is in the title. There was no choice, really. Happy 5th of November, readers. Remember, remember. Friday, November 4, 2011. The thing in the New York Times was Glen Duncan's review. She att...

Scribbler's Doorless Room: December 2012
http://scribblersdoorlessroom.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html
A Tragicomical, Unsophisticated Blog about the Weird, the Absurd, and the Banal. Friday, December 28, 2012. Inconvenience of the World. Of course, everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing when the world ended. Just like generations before with Pearl Harbor, JFK, the Oklahoma City Bombing, and 9/11, the Apocalypse left and impression. It was a very colorful affair. Rocky also requested that Ellen McLain report to Bologna to provide voice sampling. Then there was the dead rising-thing, w...

Scribbler's Doorless Room: Assumptions
http://scribblersdoorlessroom.blogspot.com/2013/03/assumptions.html
A Tragicomical, Unsophisticated Blog about the Weird, the Absurd, and the Banal. Sunday, March 10, 2013. There is an article that I revisit every so often because it amuses and inspires me. Well, it's not really an article, exactly. Every year, the Edge magazine asks a few hundred scientists, artists, and thinkers to respond to the question "What is your favorite deep, elegant, or beautiful explanation? And last year there were 194 answers. 2) Linear continuity. Tomorrow will come. What I do now ...3) Da...

Boycott BluRay: Star Trek Into Darkness, this time with SPOILERS
http://boycottbluray.blogspot.com/2013/05/star-trek-into-darkness-this-time-with.html
Monday, May 20, 2013. Star Trek Into Darkness, this time with SPOILERS. Let's get into it. I will admit that I have never seen Wrath of Khan. That said, here are my specific complaints about Star Trek: Into Darkness. As I said in my first review, I thought Abrams was telling us with his first Trek. That he was off the leash, not to be constrained by the previously established Trek. Canon (however you may feel about that decision). But what do we get as a follow up? Version. He's some kind of superhum...

Boycott BluRay: January 2013
http://boycottbluray.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Tuesday, January 15, 2013. First, let's get this out of the way:. The 10 Best Movies I Saw In 2012. Karl Urban's Chin for Best Supporting Actor. Bradley Cooper for Best Smarming Author. This movie is a lot of things I don't usually care for - generally unhappy, lacking a satisfying ending, and featuring some really unhappy, unlikable characters. But I appreciate The Words. Laika Studios for Most Exciting Animation Studio. Same genre, similar subjects, but Frankenweenie. Daniel Craig seems to be my Bond o...

Boycott BluRay: November 2012
http://boycottbluray.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Monday, November 12, 2012. I wasn't really a Bond fan until Daniel Craig remastered the superspy into a gritty, punchy daredevil, and I'm pleased to say that Skyfall. Represents a brilliant comeback from the plodding, dusty Quantum of Solace. Surely they can find it in their hearts to recognize Bardem. What I deeply appreciated about Skyfall. Is that it's a serious action film that isn't afraid to be cheeky. Casino Royale. I would also like to point out, without spoiling anything, that Skyfall. Has the b...

Wednesday, October 31, 2012. More Scary Movies I Secretly Like Watching. Happy Halloween, my lovely haunted readers! Tonight is Halloween, and in the spirit of the holiday I would like to both direct you to my Top Ten Horror Films I Secretly Kind Of Like. A list I made last year, and to also provide an addendum list (because, let's face it, I can talk all I want to about not liking horror movies - the truth is I am fascinated. The use of red in the color palette of 28 Days Later. Drag Me To Hell. Still m...

Boycott BluRay: Ender's Game
http://boycottbluray.blogspot.com/2013/11/enders-game.html
Monday, November 4, 2013. It's hard to talk about Ender's Game. Because I honestly don't know where to start. I wrote a little about it on my librarian blog (you can read it here. Much of anything. It looked good. The casting was good. I had no reason to be anything other than optimistic. To say the movie didn't deliver is an understatement. Ender commands a really cool looking, but ultimately superficial, space battle. The problem with Ender's Game. They were important. As a result, emotionally weig...

Boycott BluRay: Oblivion
http://boycottbluray.blogspot.com/2013/05/oblivion.html
Tuesday, May 21, 2013. I'm still feeling pretty whiny about Star Trek, so I'm going to chat for a bit about a movie I DID like, even though I saw it a few weeks ago (on my birthday, actually! I had moderate expectations for Oblivion. I think Tom Cruise is a talented and capable actor, even if he is pretty crazypants in real life, and generally I enjoy movies he's in ( Minority Report. Is one of my favorites, in fact). And the general attitude about Oblivion. Seemed to be "That was better than I expected!
