Florida has the most people living in the FEMA 100-year floodplain, with 1.5 million, California is next with 1.3 million, followed by Georgia with 570,000. In many states, droughts are projected to become more severe and widespread, causing major economic and environmental impacts. Our analysis evaluates each states changing summer drought threat based on the severity of widespread summer drought using soil moisture data. Fifteen of the 36 states analyzed are projected to see their summer drought threat more than double.
