Traditional middle class - Koninklijke Volkskunstgroep Reuzegom
http://www-en.reuzegomleuven.be/traditional-middle-class
In 1987, because of the upcoming celebration of 500 years Ste. Barbelen guild, we decided the time had come for some new costumes, preferably something festive dating from the 19th century. Our "normal costume" dated from 1958 and had not changed over the last 30 years, apart from a few small variations. So when we have to perform the stylish contra dances or attend formal parties we look as if we come out of a little box from 1850!

http://www-en.reuzegomleuven.be/international/trips
Every year we are trying to find a destination abroad to show our activities. Often this is at international festivals, but it may also be upon invitation of a friendly group that is organising some festivities for the occasion. In such way we have already visited most European countries and also Tunisia and Madeira in Africa and North Carolina in the USA. Summary of our trips.

Renaissance costumes - Koninklijke Volkskunstgroep Reuzegom
http://www-en.reuzegomleuven.be/renaissance-costumes
The crossbow marksmen of the Ste. Barbelen guild wear Renaissance costumes. This period, mostly ignored in historical and guild pageants, is situated in the early 16th century between the Burgundy and Spanish periods. The marksmen chose the costumes of the richer artisans, Lords of the manor (Masters), so to speak the tradesmen of the flourishing university city because the original members of the guild belonged to this class. For the freemen of the guild their sturdy masculinity is emphasised by the for...

Flag Waving - Koninklijke Volkskunstgroep Reuzegom
http://www-en.reuzegomleuven.be/flag-waving
The history of flag waving dates back to medieval times when standard-bearers and flag wavers accompanied the armies to impress the enemy and also together with the drummers to encourage their own troops. Later on the military purpose of flag waving disappeared and it was then only practiced ceremonially by the guilds. Drummers and whistlers traditionally accompanied flag wavers. (See music. This now more modern image caused the number of flag wavers to increase from 5 to 14 members with among them four ...

Crossbow shooting - Koninklijke Volkskunstgroep Reuzegom
http://www-en.reuzegomleuven.be/crossbow-shooting
N 1488 the city of Leuven magistracy allowed the guild of the guards of Ste. Barbelen to exist as amateur guild of the "Gebrokene Pese" (Broken String) and to participate in all kinds of celebrations. Thus the guild of Ste. Barbelen resorted under the city of Leuven and no longer under the principal St. Sebastian guild as was usual at that time. On 22 November 1958 the city council of Leuven awarded the folk art group Reuzegom with the title "Guild of Ste.Barbelen". On the occasion of the 550th anniversa...

International - Koninklijke Volkskunstgroep Reuzegom
http://www-en.reuzegomleuven.be/international
On of the most attractive sides of the folk art experience is undoubtedly the contact with other cultures. While the world is slowly becoming one large village and globalisation is manifest everywhere, folklore lovers still have a healthy interest and much respect for the peculiarities of other regions. Whoever has sampled the nightly talks in an Irish pub or the warm hospitality of a German family knows what we are on about.

Thanks to the extensive research by the Institute for Flemish Folk Art, more than 150 traditional Flemish folk dances were noted down and published, ranging from simple community dances and more difficult "quadrilles" to really complicated figure dances.Traditional Flemish folk dances were danced at important celebrations such as weddings, house removals, springtime and the reaping of the harvest. We always perform with our own musicians. Entrance via J.P. Minckelersstraat).
