About the Museum

The Schoolhouse museum is on the National Register of Historic Places. The one-room schoolhouse in which the museum is housed was built in 1872 and was an operational school until 1905. It now serves as a museum of historic artifacts and is maintained by the Ridgewood Historical Society. Formerly District School No. 45, the Museum features exhibits that emphasize the historic Saddle River Valley area in the 18th and 19th centuries, an area that was primarily Dutch when first settled.

The Ridgewood Historical Society came into existence as a result of a name change in 1996. Previously it was the Paramus Historical and Preservation Society which had been organized by the Old Paramus Reformed Church. Because the Paramus Historical and Preservation Society as well as the Church have always been located in Ridgewood and have never had any relationship with the municipality known as Paramus, also in Bergen County , the name was changed for the sake of clarity. The Schoolhouse Museum is an interesting place for visits by individuals, families, school classes, and scout groups. It offers special opportunities for both children and adults to learn more about local history and culture and its evolution. Saturdays 1:00- 3:00 pm. Sundays 2:00- 4:00 pm. Thursdays 1:00- 3:00 pm. August Hours: Sundays Only. Group tours on other days and at other times may be arranged by appointment. Email tours@ridgewoodhistoricalsociety.org. Or phone the schoolhouse at 201-447-3242.
