...and branches and bark and berries, you get the idea
September | 2014 | Rowan's Roots
https://rowanblaisdell.wordpress.com/2014/09
8230;and branches and bark and berries, you get the idea. Monthly Archives: September 2014. In our workouts, in our relationships, in our work, in whatever we do for personal growth. It’s the edges that we need to find to enact a change. Sometimes they’re sharp and we come up on them abruptly, causing us to shrink back and wonder what just happened. Others are more familiar and are worn smooth by repeated visits. I’m just starting grad school, I’m an intern at a college counseling center, eve...September...

8230;and branches and bark and berries, you get the idea. Thirteen is hard. I remember it, and not fondly. My daughter will turn 14 in August, she graduates from 8th grade tonight. Over the past two years I’ve watched her move rapidly from a child to a young adult. It’s a fierce transition, sometimes painful, sometimes sublime. Lydia and I had a profound first meeting, you can read about it here. In short, it’s a crazy time. I don’t tell her enough how many times a day I think about her and smile. Someti...
Go Lydia, It’s Your Birthday… | Rowan's Roots
https://rowanblaisdell.wordpress.com/2012/08/22/go-lydia-its-your-birthday
8230;and branches and bark and berries, you get the idea. Go Lydia, It’s Your Birthday…. 11 years ago my second, and last, daughter Lydia was born. As soon as she entered our atmosphere the midwife whisked her away, handed her little body to the nurse and directed her to bring her to the warming table outside and to call the MD on duty. She then turned to me, speaking very slowly and softly, (which was so much scarier than if she had shouted). This entry was posted in Uncategorized. August 22, 2012.
Who’s Your Daddy? | Rowan's Roots

8230;and branches and bark and berries, you get the idea. Who’s Your Daddy? OK, so it’s July, but this was written for my other blog. And I thought it was worth sharing here, enjoy! I can’t let June slip by without a post about being a dad. Our family has never really celebrated Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, that’s just how we roll. However, lots of folks like to mark that third Sunday in June, and I want to tell you about my experience. How did two such different kids emerge from the same union? You are...
Loving us into Being | Rowan's Roots
https://rowanblaisdell.wordpress.com/2015/06/22/loving-us-into-being
8230;and branches and bark and berries, you get the idea. Loving us into Being. So here we were again, this time at the Take Out. We sat in a circle as each of us were honored and given feedback on how we had come across, how we had shifted, how we had grown since that orientation day. We were held, we were challenged and we were loved. We love our clients. When they open up and let us in, when they share their broken parts, we fall in love with them. How could we not? They do this by loving us into Being.

January 12, 2017. January 12, 2017. When Dow woke from the dream and realized he’d slept through class, he gave his professor a call. Ted answered the phone and Dow said, I’m sorry I missed class. Something very strange happened. Ted was glad he wasn’t in the hospital, but he wouldn’t be glad for long. Where the inner and outer worlds over-lap and meet is what Novalis called the seat of the soul. Tolkien called it Middle Earth. The Elves love trees and take the time to learn their language. An Ode to the Underground. March 8, 2017. March 8, 2017. Sansaku: An Ode to the Underground. My brother turns seventy in a few days and forty years ago we were deep underground in Carlsbad Caverns. He wanted to take some photographs and knew he’d need a number of slow and wide-open exposures. I had brought my journal. We’d be there awhile. The grandeur of the place was like the paradox found looking up and into the night-time sky, which was Garon’s other great scientific passion at the time. We felt ...

November 30, 2016. December 1, 2016. Sansaku: A Different Diagnosis. From my years as a training director, I have notebooks on most of the major clinical disorders. They’re filled with lecture notes and articles, along with a few case notes and evaluations. The one on bipolar disorder is definitely the fattest of the batch. There’s an essay I’ve often copied and given away in Murray Stein’s anthology,. Needless to say, he alienated a lot of people along the way. When Kay Redfield Jamison wrote. I found t...

January 31, 2017. If Hollywood wrote the script, Dow would have panicked and looked like a blind and naked fool running in circles. He’d probably stub a toe or fall in a cactus before he came to his senses. It’s not what Dow did. He was sitting in the very center of a beautiful living cathedral. Maybe because of his distorted eyes which saw in shades instead of detail, it looked all the more magnificent in the way the empty space of a Chinese landscape painting expands to include imagination. Because of ...

Of Our Hands, One Hand. Occasional posts on the heart and art of massage therapy. June 22, 2015. Your Mind on Leash. There are an awful lot of dogs everywhere, have you noticed? You don’t notice the cats because 1) those who try to walk their cats on a leash experience new and meaningful definitions for the word “recalcitrant” 2) they are muy pequeño. 3) cats don’t need a walk. They need a lie down, a stretch, a pounce, but they don’t need “a walk.” Don’t be insulting. In its own right! Part of the rewar...

Om Mani Padme Hum. September 27, 2016. Sansaku: Om Mani Padme Hum. Why do we think the psyche is the interior, something inside? We are immersed in psyche. This is from David Abrams, who was speaking at the college in ’06. From the way I write, I can’t discern which thought is his and which is mine. They blur together. It’s one of my many academic weaknesses. He translated the Om Mani Padme Hum chant as May All Sentient Beings Fall in Love with Each Other. They are dwellers at the edge. And it was at...

Diogenes and the Beast. January 9, 2017. Sansaku: Diogenes and the Beast. A few days ago, I was showing a friend a photo of my dad playing piano at a wedding in Prescott. He reminded me of someone and I finally placed it yesterday. I couldn’t believe it took me so long. He looked exactly like Tramp from the Disney classic that came out when I was still a child. I loved that movie and probably told my dad, I think you’re just like Tramp. He was called Diogenes the Cynic, and the name roughly translates as...
The Talker | bestslowly

January 8, 2017. This little story comes from Northern Exposure, and Marilyn Whirlwind could have been describing Dow. He was a talker and a very good one. But he didn’t believe his words. He’d been taught to tell others what they wanted to hear. It’s a recipe for success in school and business, but a disaster for the soul. While Em could never be attracted to someone she didn’t respect, she was very permissive with those she loved. Some might think her blind, but no one thought her fragile. Because of t...

January 6, 2017. The Crystal Palace in Tombstone, at least when my father was playing piano there in the sixties, was what he called a compressor or facilitator. Things happened and you couldn’t quite predict what would. You had to hold your breath and wanted to be there when it did. Everyone wondered how Dahl made his money, but no one thought to ask. When Em stepped into the house, she knew. He had been an artist and from the look of it still was. Mostly he painted clouds. She recognized the sky. Picki...

Galloping minds that hide. You know also from. Which they cower and fake. Like rabbits in the pitch. Dark halls of the market. Early hours and blurry eyes. The denial revels in gratification. 8230;and branches and bark and berries, you get the idea. The Importance of Feedback. A friend recently commented on her circle of friends, remarking how grateful she was for them, and how much they had helped her grow. She mentioned that they sometimes have dinners where they give each other real and relevant feedback. This is, perhaps, the greatest gift one human can give another. I wrote about my internship at the Counseling Center in an earlier post, you can find it here. We’re taught not to th...
