Tuesday, February 9, 2010. Rags and riches by the Myoshoji. Rags and riches by the Myoshoji. Artisans down by the riverside make a clean job of preserving priceless traditions. Few writers have been able to evoke the bare beams of poverty or the lambent lives of those who endure it with more dignity than Fumiko Hayashi (1903-1951). Spotless reputations: Wataru Shimizu (left) and Yukio Kato are expert professionals in the specialist field of shimi-nuki (stain removal from kimono and delicate fabrics).

The Caustic Bunny: October 2005
http://causticbunny.blogspot.com/2005_10_01_archive.html
Because everybody needs an invisible rabbit. Saturday, October 29, 2005. Thanks for Pointing That Out. The last bit of moving into the knob and tube palace was finished the other day and as usual, it was much more complicated than it should have been and as usual, there's a story of woe and misfortune in it. I had rented a small storage garage in town last summer when the house was being shown for sale and filled it with things that should not be shown for sale. No, not that! The same day I decided to fi...

The Caustic Bunny: December 2005
http://causticbunny.blogspot.com/2005_12_01_archive.html
Because everybody needs an invisible rabbit. Saturday, December 17, 2005. Oh, Tante Baum. It is the time of year again when men go deep into the woods with killing tools to emerge hauling freshly slaughtered carcases that they then strap to their four wheel drives and bring home to their families. Something has to be done to stop this senseless evergreen slaughter. And fast. The solstice is incidentally the shortest day of the year and was celebrated by the pagans-an animist faith that believed in enjoyi...

The Caustic Bunny: September 2005
http://causticbunny.blogspot.com/2005_09_01_archive.html
Because everybody needs an invisible rabbit. Friday, September 30, 2005. A few days ago, I came across a fellow blogger who listed some of her favorite expressions. Then, this morning, I came across a BBC online. Article. Foreign words with unique uses in their native cultures and in ours. Ain't that just French for ya? My favorite observation of the French comes from "Blackadder" where, after Napoleon grouses that the English regard them as "Weeds, whoopsies and big girl's blouses! It's weird that Engli...

Because everybody needs an invisible rabbit. Monday, November 28, 2005. Just Like Us, Only Spelled Wrong. The knob and tube palace keeps my interest level in "how to do it" shows unnaturally high in that This Old House or Discovery or TLC is usually dealing with some subject that I know will eventually break at my place. And a week or two later, preferably just after the 30 warranty has expired, something involving a boiler and scalding water will let go, usually at three in the morning. OK, I may be a l...

The Caustic Bunny: August 2005
http://causticbunny.blogspot.com/2005_08_01_archive.html
Because everybody needs an invisible rabbit. Sunday, August 28, 2005. A quick story about three friends of mine, none of whom know each other and all of whom have two things in common. One, they are my friend, two, they share the name James. All are referred to as Jim. A Marine in Viet Nam, Jim didn't go looking for trouble but knew what to do if it found him. Jim has been there for most of the crap that has been my life for the last two years and I appreciate him to no end. My idea of a joke was to move...

Because everybody needs an invisible rabbit. Saturday, April 29, 2006. And My Back Hurts and I Can't Stand This Office. Bear with me while I clear some cobwebs and beer from an anterior lobe. It's early morning and instead of rolling over on the cat, I'm here. You, my loving audience. Both of you, though one I think is still asleep and the other is compiling Magazine Man's. Entries for months ending with a "y.". Blog writing. It's not just a job, its a way out of a Saturday morning hangover. The old man ...
