Here are many theories on why man and dog developed this symbiotic relationship but whichever theory you choose to believe - the relationship between man and his dog has produced a multitude of canines suited to every person and purpose imaginable. The Saluki holds the privlege of being one of the first selectively bred and meticulously lineaged canines to grace our presence. Though the Saluki's heritage lies more than 10,000 years past, the preservers of the breed are the Arab. For many centuries, the nomadic Bedouin depended on the swift Saluki to bring down game for the tribe's cooking pots. Although dogs were pronounced unclean when the Islamic religion swept the Arab world (600 - 1918), a special exemption was made for the Saluki. It was believed that the Saluki was a gift from Allah and, like the Egyptians, they called the hound El Hor, or the Noble One.

One of the earliest civilizations known to have spread across Mesopotamia were the SUMERIANS. Recent excavations of ancient Mesopotamia/Sumerian Empire (7000-6000 B.C.) have unearthed evidence of dogs with a striking resemblance to the Saluki. The Sumerians kept these canines for hunting and left various carvings and seals of them. Any times the Saluki's hunting ability was all that stood between the Arab and starvation. The swift Saluki was used to run down fleet game such as hare, fox and various types of gazelle. The nature of the terrain dictated what they had to be physically; the nature of the hunt and the life style of the tribes dictated what they had to be mentally.
