A “clean sweep” of the 13 Colonies | KK4DSD
https://kk4dsd.com/2015/07/05/a-clean-sweep-of-the-13-colonies
When pigs fly on radio waves they travel at the speed of light! A “clean sweep” of the 13 Colonies. July 5, 2015. I guess a few years makes a difference. Back in 2012, as a complete ham radio newbie, I worked about 2-3 of these 13 Colonies stations. I think I worked a few more over the years, but never achieved the “clean sweep” — that is, working all of them during the five-day event. Here’s my final breakdown:. K2A – New York – 40M RTTY. K2B – Virginia – 40M SSB. K2C – Rhode Island – 40M SSB. Just some...

Close but no cigar at the swapfest | KK4DSD

When pigs fly on radio waves they travel at the speed of light! Close but no cigar at the swapfest. April 6, 2015. Our club held its annual “swapfest” this past weekend, and I took a trunkload of gear that I’d hoped to sell, namely a Baofeng UV3R, a programming cable for that radio, an old 2m/440 antenna with a drill-through mount and a magmount, an old Icom desk mic, and my old Yaesu FT-847 station, complete with LDG autotuner and the Yaesu desk mic. In other news, thanks to recent contests, I’ve ...

When pigs fly on radio waves they travel at the speed of light! A weekend immersed in radio. June 2, 2014. June 2, 2014. Code practice oscillator designed by Bill, W4FSV, of Breadboard Radio. I didn’t do a lot of operating or DXing, but ham radio was infused in just about every aspect of my weekend, from finishing the SoftRock to the local 2-meter net. Built a code practice oscillator as part of a workshop our club was supporting. This is more like it…. May 29, 2014. May 29, 2014. Still not done though&#...

If a tree falls on your antenna and no one notices, does it affect your ability to make QSOs? | KK4DSD

When pigs fly on radio waves they travel at the speed of light! If a tree falls on your antenna and no one notices, does it affect your ability to make QSOs? March 9, 2015. March 9, 2015. Whelp, once again, a tree has fallen on the long leg of my dipole, and like the previous time. It didn’t have much of an effect on shack operations. Stations moving at a slightly lower speed were infinitely more copyable (and enjoyable) to work. But I digress. I think I only logged 40 QSOs in the ARRL DX contest with so...

When pigs fly on radio waves they travel at the speed of light! My First SOTA Activation: Sassafras Mountain (W4C/US-001). July 21, 2015. July 21, 2015. The overlook at Sassafrass Mountain affords a beautiful view to the west. Cross one more item off my ham radio bucket list: Activating a peak for Summits on the Air. When I was first seeking my license, I quickly discovered the cult that is SOTA. I believe it was Jerry, KD0BIK’s podcast. I enjoyed a panel discussion on SOTA at a Charlotte Hamfest in 2013.

When pigs fly on radio waves they travel at the speed of light! Coax dead, HF down…. July 8, 2016. I unscrewed the coax from the back of the radio and jiggled it around a bit. That seemed to help and suddenly the bands were loud and I could hear some faint signals. So the coax jumper has gone bad. I’ll replace it. A few moments later, I had the same problem: very low noise and no activity on the bands. At it was nearly 10 pm by now, there was very little I could do, so I turned everything off. Saturday a...

Right on cue, blogger/ham radio op, NT1K wrote a post today about his ham radio bucket list, and it made me realize I still have some major accomplishments left to do. It’s a good read, so go check it out. Other items of interest lately:. Facebook — what is it good for? Keep Calm and Move On. Build your own CW decoder. Jerry, KD0BIK, breaks PARP silence. Updates + a new game for 75 meters | KK4DSD
https://kk4dsd.com/2015/05/20/updates-a-new-game-for-75-meters
When pigs fly on radio waves they travel at the speed of light! Updates a new game for 75 meters. May 20, 2015. It’s been a long time since I’ve written anything here, and as before, it’s largely because I simply haven’t been on-air or involved in the hobby in a meaningful way over the past few months. On a lighter note, I saw this amazing scavenger hunt game. On Reddit today and it made me want to dial up a 75 meter frequency and play along! Close but no cigar at the swapfest. A mystery (solved?) on 10 meters, #WATwitter | KK4DSD
https://kk4dsd.com/2013/12/02/a-mystery-solved-on-10-meters-watwitter
When pigs fly on radio waves they travel at the speed of light! On 10 meters, #WATwitter. December 2, 2013. December 3, 2013. Using extreme caution to prevent the rather large limb from falling on me, I dragged it off the support rope and watched it crash down with a thud, kicking up swamp water and primordial ooze. The dipole was sagging pretty badly, so I untied the support and re-tied it back at the recommended 8-foot height. He suggested I shorten the stretched wire a bit. I shall take his advice...
