Bringing Pompeii and Herculaneum. How they can help us understand Roman Britain. For nearly 400 years, much of England, including what is now Cambridgeshire, was part of the Roman Empire. In 79 AD, soon after Britannia became part of that Empire, Mount Vesuvius erupted about a thousand miles away, covering the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum in ash and lava.
