Anthropologisches Palaver, Eric! Just a mere thought. Tuesday, August 21, 2012. Why didn't I publish this? Quasi-Repost: Messing around with trees: Ardipithecus ramidus. Hey there, haven't posted anything in a while haven't I? A few weeks back when I desperately sought for stuff to waste my time with, I came up with a very nice, but also quite strange Idea: How about ruining some phylogenetic trees? The authors didn’t publish a tree by themselves, but they did publish a nice little table of charact...

Smile Like You Mean It. August 19, 2011 at 8:14 am ( Uncategorized. Illustration by Elaine Liu. Weddings, college reunions, and big family dinners can be fun at least until the cameras come out. Might be best to maintain that genuine smile, though. Recent research suggests a sincere smile can convey trustworthiness and kindness, and might even improve the smiler’s mood. Say Cheese The Takeaway. So what’s the harm in faking it ‘til we make it? Also known as the Duchenne smile. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Why are People Scared of Public Speaking? August 11, 2011 at 11:32 am ( Uncategorized. For some, a raucous audience, a lonely stage, and a spotlight zeroing in on a microphone is a pretty terrifying image. Public speaking is often cited as the world’s most common phobia, beating out trips to the dentist, spiders, and even death on the list of biggest fears. Ladies and Gentlemen, (gulp) Why it Matters. Research suggests the fear of public speaking can stem from poor self-image. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Anthropologisches Palaver, Eric! Just a mere thought. Tuesday, May 20, 2014. I always wanted to finish University before the construction of the new Building for the Institute was done. I missed the mark by 13 months. Im done with University. Not in a Im so fed up that I quit and started a career as an eccentric artist kind of way, although I came pretty close to this state several times in the last two years. Im done in the sense that I have finished everything that is required of me to get my degree.

Anthropologisches Palaver, Eric! Just a mere thought. Wednesday, September 28, 2011. Where to put Australopithecus sediba? It took me some time to decide what I should do with. On this Blog, in the end I decided to concentrate on the aspects I at least know a little bit of, one of them is taxonomy. First of all, let’s have a look at a classic tree which illustrates the phylogenetic relationships among the genus Homo. I took the tree from Strait et al. (1997) for this particular example:. Was so diverse i...

Anthropologischer Firlefanz, Eric!

APE: (Not) always worth mentioning: Bipedalism in fossils
http://affenglisch.blogspot.com/2012/04/not-always-worth-mentioning-bipedalism.html
Anthropologisches Palaver, Eric! Just a mere thought. Wednesday, April 4, 2012. Not) always worth mentioning: Bipedalism in fossils. News of potentially bipedal fossils always seem to be interesting. However there are different kinds of bipedalisms and not everyone of them is worth mentioning. But the question whether or not the fossil in question walked on two legs or not isn’t really that important. What’s more important is the question, if it was an obligate Biped. Humans on the other hand are obligat...

I’m sitting at my Thesis for quite some time by now. Well, “sitting” isn’t really the appropriate term. I circling around it, like a dog who isn’t sure if he should really lay down on the carpet or not. It goes without saying that this isn’t a really satisfying state of affairs, for three reasons:. 2 I don’t have anything better to do. You probably have not...

December 24, 2014. Some Holiday Reindeer Science. Have you ever wondered how animals who live near the poles know when to sleep, what with the long seasons of mostly light or mostly dark days? Behavior (sleep/wake, brain activity, physical activity). Physiology (hormone levels, metabolism, body temp). Cellular functions (cell cycle and maintenance). Gene expression (e.g. transcription). However, and this is a side note: melatonin levels do decrease with exposure to light even late at night. That is why s...
