SE Texas Birding and Wildlife Watching. Jeff Mohamed blogs about birds and other wildlife in the Houston area - and occasionally farther afield. Sunday, July 26, 2015. Hotter than You Know What. The past week has been really hot here in southeast Texas, with highs getting pretty close to the 100F mark. We've been avoiding the heat and enjoying our air-conditioning but our birds have been suffering. Our young male and female Northern Cardinals have been looking stressed, too. Tuesday, July 21, 2015. I'm a...

Daily photos and thoughts. Sunday, February 15, 2015. It was a very special day yesterday. Not only because it was Valentines Day but because I was lucky enough to watch a Short-eared Owl hunting! As any birder would understand, just how excited I was when I realized it was a Short-eared Owl, a life bird for me! And grab my camera. I knew it was a good chance it may not be there when I returned but I really wanted to try and get a shot of it. February 15, 2015 at 11:29 PM. A couple of weeks ago on a earl...

SE Texas Birding and Wildlife Watching. Jeff Mohamed blogs about birds and other wildlife in the Houston area - and occasionally farther afield. Sunday, August 02, 2015. Down by the Bay. In the event, there were fewer birds visible than on any of my (many) previous visits. After half-an-hour, we had seen only a couple each of Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets and Cattle Egrets, and a few Yellow-crowned Night Herons (below). At first glance, the main bay area seemed fairly empty except for a few Egrets on small ...

SE Texas Birding and Wildlife Watching. Jeff Mohamed blogs about birds and other wildlife in the Houston area - and occasionally farther afield. Monday, July 28, 2014. Late Saturday morning we spent an hour in the park around the San Jacinto Monument. To be honest, the park isn't one of my favorite birding sites: Although it can host some good birds, the latter are usually too far away for comfortable viewing and photographing. So why did we visit? One of two Brown Pelicans was much closer to the shore.
