Greater Kent Birder: Canon 7D mk 2 - High ISO and noise suppression.
http://greaterkentbirder.blogspot.com/2015/06/canon-7d-mk-2-high-iso-and-noise.html
Wednesday, 24 June 2015. Canon 7D mk 2 - High ISO and noise suppression. This last week I came upon a situation where I had to use high ISO settings - actually very high ISO settings on my Canon 7D mk 2. I had found a family of stoats - 5 pups of various sizes and an adult. Most of the time the pups were on a ledge that was deeply shaded - think of a ledge under a bridge and you will have a reasonable picture of the situation. I was pretty close - 7-8 yards max. Then I noticed the "Threshold". Since I no...

Greater Kent Birder: August 2014
http://greaterkentbirder.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Monday, 4 August 2014. The white wheatear and a twister. Today was my first day out for over 2 weeks. I've not been away somewhere exotic, I've been at home feeling sorry for myself.I have been ( and still am in fact) suffering from a blocked salivary gland. So for my first outing I thought I go look for the leucistic wheatear that has been hanging around Sandwich for the last few days. Actually being almost totally white it's pretty easy to find but not so easy to get near to. Rather distant 1st attempt.

Greater Kent Birder: June 2014
http://greaterkentbirder.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Saturday, 14 June 2014. Rye Meads, Rye Harbour and Goodnestone. The last week has been rather rather quiet on the birding/photography front. As it happens it didn't really matter as the birds are on eggs and only one change-over occurred in the 3.5 hrs I was there and even then the neither birds came close. Too close to get it's wings in. The avocets can still be found quite near the fence line early morning though they don't let you get very close. Thursday, 5 June 2014. First up we found stonechats (3 ...

Greater Kent Birder: Birdwatching in Sri Lanka March 2015.........and a little bit of sight seeing. Last few days.

Tuesday, 28 April 2015. Birdwatching in Sri Lanka March 2015.and a little bit of sight seeing. Last few days. 2932015 - 1.4.2015. My days at Ging Oya quickly assumed the same routine. I was up at first light, had a walk around the gardens then got one of the pushbikes and cycled around the local area, looking at the beach, the lagoons, the open area, getting back to the hotel just after 9.00. The number of species seen was pretty limited but some species were more common here than at Habarana. A bird we ...

Greater Kent Birder: July 2014
http://greaterkentbirder.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Friday, 25 July 2014. Backsand is a thing of the past.and it shall be missed. For those of you who don't know Backsand it was a scrape rented by SBBO adjacent to the River Stour, on the opposite side of the river to the Pfizer site, about 3 miles from the Obs itself. It did have a few problems in that the siting of the hide meant the best time for photography was between about 11.00 am and 2.00 pm so for optimum conditions you needed high tide to fall between these hours and hope there wasn't too...Due t...

Greater Kent Birder: May 2014
http://greaterkentbirder.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Saturday, 17 May 2014. Crested Tits and Black-winged stilts at Marquenterre. Friday saw Steve A and myself return to Marquenterre - by coincidence a coach party from the SBBO was also going to be there. The plan was to spend the first hour or so in the car park (as normal) then to try to improve on the spoonbill shots we managed the previous week. Things didn't work out as planned. Adult in the fir tree. Juvenile in the fir tree. Adult (front) and juvenile. It was around now we realised there were 4 or e...

Greater Kent Birder: Another trip to France - Grand-Laviers and Marquentere.
http://greaterkentbirder.blogspot.com/2015/05/another-trip-to-france-grand-laviers.html
Saturday, 23 May 2015. Another trip to France - Grand-Laviers and Marquentere. Yesterday we (Steve Ashton, Alan Ashdown, Martyn Wilson, Tim Gutsall and yours truly) enjoyed another trip to France organised by Ashtontours the company famous (in equal parts) for it's photography and character assassination. It's because of the latter I'm trying to get my post out before that of Mr Ashton and it's inevitable slandering of my good name! What was on view were loads of black necked grebes and black-winged stil...

http://greaterkentbirder.blogspot.com/2015/04/sri-lanka-birdwatching-march-2015and_22.html
Wednesday, 22 April 2015. Sri Lanka Birdwatching March 2015.and a little bit of sight seeing. Day 7. 2732015. Cinnamon Lodge to Ging Oya Lodge. Today I only had an hour or so in the grounds before we had an early(ish) breakfast and then the long journey to Ging Oya Lodge (http:/ www.gingoya.com/). Nothing new in the gardens today but I did get close to a tawny bellied babbler, and orange-breasted green pigeons and spotted pigeons showed well. better in fact than the rest of the week. The hotel grounds we...

Greater Kent Birder: Rye Harbour - June 18th
http://greaterkentbirder.blogspot.com/2015/06/rye-harbour-june-18th.html
Friday, 19 June 2015. Rye Harbour - June 18th. With the weather looking fair I went to Rye Harbour but the need to do some chores it meant I didn't arrive till after 11.00 am. As always the target was the terns with the possibility of a wheatear. Walking past Lime Kiln Cottage I found a male then 2 juveniles then a female wheatear on the grassy bank. As it was nearly midday the light was pretty grim but it was good to see them. Sandwich terns and chicks. Or perhaps they lost their first attempt) and a gr...
