Tuesday, August 9, 2011. The myth of self-sufficiency. I think in American culture we spend a lot of time talking about being self-sufficient, self-reliant, independent. After all, this is the "home of the free," is it not? What's more free than absolute self-sufficiency? Since childhood, we are taught that the emphasis is on learning to "grow up," but what does it mean to be a grown-up? I think often being a grown-up is defined as being able to do things on your own. Maybe that definition is flawed.
