How does our garden Grow

How does our garden Grow. Sunday, June 21, 2015. Challenges and successes in a northern Alaskan garden. Its officially week three into our safe planting time and we’re now harvesting baby kale greens, rapini (or also called Broccoli Rabe which is pronounced raab), some lettuce, arugula, micro greens and oddly enough, mustard greens which were from last year. They obviously reseeded themselves. As of today I harvested our first two radishes, and wow, surprise, no sign of root maggots! For the past year.

How does our garden Grow: February 2014

http://tamsgarden-howdoesourgardengrow.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

How does our garden Grow. Thursday, February 27, 2014. Patience is the key. Once again, we are rebuilding, starting from scratch. A new yard, new plans, this time more permanent than the last time in Aberdeen, Maryland. Saadi, a Persian poet from the medieval period once said “Have patience. All things are difficult before they become easy”. I think that applies here. Plans for this year? What keeps us going? We keep moving forward with the thought that while we have the expenses now, if we work hard we ...

How does our garden Grow. Monday, June 9, 2014. Building a Garden; Alaska Style. Ever since the snow has melted, about a month or so ago, we have been adding bits for our garden. Buying small bits here and there and all the while waiting for the day when we can really start building. I knew the day would come, and once it did we would be super busy. Of course, I was right. Thankfully, I've been using Swagbucks. We managed to find a family further outside of Fairbanks who had an enormous collection of all...

How does our garden Grow. Monday, November 3, 2014. Gardening in Alaska Winter Returns. Life in Alaska moves infinitely slower than it does where we came from on the East coast but our gardening season is much much faster. So much so that it stunned me how quickly it ended. By the middle of September we were getting close to the type of temperatures that would kill the cold loving brassicas so we knew, the time has come to harvest what was left. Strawberries: very limited success with these. Could be...

How does our garden Grow. Friday, August 23, 2013. Recently I received a box of Woolzies Dryer Balls. To try out and I decided the perfect time to give them a shot was on the loads and loads of laundry that comes back with us when we go camping. Now first keep in mind. I do not use store bought laundry detergent. Some while back we switched to homemade for several reasons. If you are interested in reading more about that follow this link. So please keep in mind, your results might be different than mine.

How does our garden Grow. Tuesday, March 18, 2014. Cutting our electricity bill: Exciting Conclusions. Since the last time I have written on our electricity bill and our efforts in reducing it we’ve had a few developments. He got a job so that loss of energy is now gone! Another important thing to keep in mind as I report all of this, our energy cost is much higher than the average in the lower 48 where the typical price is .12 per kWh. Now onto the fun part of all of this; the experiments! This all allo...

Plant Happiness, Harvest Joy : A blog about gardening at longitude 38.8° (the DC metro area)*. Thursday, November 3, 2011. Still time to plant Spring bulbs. Gardening is all about hoping for the best. This sense of hope is well represented by the spring bulb. Spring bulbs are nature’s little bundles of delayed gratification. In each bulb is a harbinger of spring; a snow drop or crocus, a daffodil or tulip. All this will be yours in exchange for some hard labor now in the fall. Plant all bulbs, including ...
