Posts Tagged ‘evolution’. A fish’s tale explaining the origins of major groups of jawed fish. Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010. Our story begins long ago with an ancient jawless fish from whom came every tetrapod, from an axolotl to a zebra-finch, and almost every fish in the seas, lakes and rivers. This fish’s parents were ostracoderms. Extinct fishes covered in an armour made from scales of dermal bone. They had cartilaginous endoskeletons. Mechanism to better ventilate the gills. The gill slit between t...

Science is not for boys, it's not for girls: it's for everyone. Wednesday, 20 February 2013. The first ScienceGrrl AGM! Ladies and gentlemen, may I present Isla Stevens, who will now regale us with merry tales of Friday's first ever ScienceGrrl AGM. Over to you, Isla! Having been involved in the consultation evening and subsequently as a social media minion under the guidance of Anna Zecharia. Seen the tumblr yet? Stand back, we’re going to try science. The mood at the AGM was fantastic – there was...

Immediate early (IE) stage. The phage’s lytic cycle uses three promoters P. These need to be strong promoters so that they can recruit the host polymerase. The host polymerase binds preferentially to these promoters to such an extent that if many copies of the promoters are artificially inserted the cell is unable to transcribe its own DNA and dies. P. Promotes a transcript which initially terminates after transcription for N, an anti-termination protein. Transcription from P. Delayed early (DE) stage.

Posts Tagged ‘latex’. Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013. I’ve long been a convert to the wonderful typesetting engine L a. But it wasn’t until very recently that I fully understood its power. Given my very untidy handwriting, I keep my entire lab book in L a. It includes many images of gels, such as the one below. What is special about this gel is the clean image above it. This is a simulation – what do I expect a gel to look like if it has certain band sizes? Loaded onto gel (TGL14 DNA. }{. Warning: totally unco...

ScienceGrrl 2013: ScienceGrrl celebrates International Women's Day - with TASTE, in Uganda
http://sciencegrrluk.blogspot.com/2013/03/sciencegrrl-celebrates-international.html
Science is not for boys, it's not for girls: it's for everyone. Monday, 18 March 2013. ScienceGrrl celebrates International Women's Day - with TASTE, in Uganda. I'm really chuffed - as we say in Yorkshire - to introduce this guest post from Amy Buchanan-Hughes, founder of The African Science Truck Experience (TASTE). TASTE runs a mobile science laboratory in rural Uganda so that students in underprivileged secondary schools can get a hands-on experience of science. However, the real horizons are wider th...

Technical' words can be 'enclosed' in single quotes if, for example, you need to 'define' them. 'Phrases need underscores'. You can refer to people by calling them Mr Surname or Mrs Surname (e.g. Mr Obama). If you want you can cheat slightly using this, for example referring to Mr Hydrogen and Mrs Oxygen. Once you have come up with something amazing, click Perma-link. The image is from #386.
