Thoughts and musings about education, teaching and what it means to be a teachermom. The Letter I Meant to Read…. So, here is the letter I meant to read…. To Whom It May Concern,. Even through all of this frustration, I have come to realize that my child is one of the fortunate ones. He has me to help supplement his textbook stories as well as a dedicated dad to make his often confusing math work more realistic and concrete. Yet what about the others? I believe every child is unique. I believe every ...

Life After Teaching, Part Five: Why I Don’t Need Summers Off Anymore | Those Who Teach
https://thosewhoteach.wordpress.com/2014/07/15/life-after-teaching-part-five-why-i-dont-need-summers-off-anymore
Giving Voice to Good Teachers. July 15, 2014. Life After Teaching, Part Five: Why I Don’t Need Summers Off Anymore. Even though I left teaching last summer, I didn’t find a new, non-teaching job. That means, for the first time in seven years, school’s out — but I’m working full-time. Get a little misty-eyed seeing the adventures my teacher friends on Facebook are having…. Here’s why leaving teaching to work year-round at a “real” job has been worth it to me:. I get to “sleep in.”. Not only am I essay-fre...

Giving Voice to Good Teachers. August 4, 2015. Life After Teaching, Part Seven: Five (More) Things I Learned in Year Two. Last time, I wrote about how teaching is still woven into who I am. Two years after quitting. Like it or not, my teacher side shows in my thinking, the clothes I wear, and, it turns out, my accessories. Since the last post, I remembered that I’d also been carrying one of my teacher bags to work. It’s a black canvas number roomy enough for several sets of papers. I like to think that m...

Giving Voice to Good Teachers. November 21, 2013. Life After Teaching, Part Three: Yup, I Joined the Club. Three dusty, plastic crates sit in a closet in my apartment. Their contents include hardcover, dog-eared Folger Library editions of Shakespeare plays, piles of novels, hanging folders, manila folders, scattered handouts and a couple of DVDs. (Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo and Juliet” and Kenneth Branagh’s “Othello,” to be exact). Almost three months have passed, but I just updated my About. Leaving teaching...

https://thosewhoteach.wordpress.com/2015/06/30/life-after-teaching-part-six-five-things-i-learned-in-year-two
Giving Voice to Good Teachers. June 30, 2015. Life After Teaching, Part Six: Five Things I Learned in Year Two. As I got dressed for work one recent morning, my husband glanced at me. “That’s a teacher outfit,” he said. I was skeptical at first: The black cardigan and blue silk dress. An ensemble I’d worn many times to school, but what was so special about it? When I looked in the mirror, though, my clothes did read “English teacher” somehow. The outfit that gave me away. 1 I miss being around kids.
Five Skills Teachers Have That Employers Want | Those Who Teach
https://thosewhoteach.wordpress.com/2014/01/30/five-skills-teachers-have-that-employers-want
Giving Voice to Good Teachers. January 30, 2014. Five Skills Teachers Have That Employers Want. Teachers are some of the most hardworking, patient and reliable workers out there. I know this and other people who’ve taught know this, but if you’re a teacher looking to start over, how can you persuade employers outside education? Or sing songs about bunnies to an adoring crowd of small children. You must show them they’re wrong about you. To do this, you need to take an inventory of your transferable skill...

Teachers Speak Out!
Tuesday, December 27, 2011. What a Busy Time of the Year! Teaching a class of a 130some students, grading papers, tests, (and as always) fine tuning lesson plans, letters of recommendation, the holidays, family commitments, traveling, and life in general can certainly get in the way of a blog! I've always liked the idea of a year round schedule. It seems less taxing on both teachers and students. Parents don't like the idea because many still think of K-12 education as baby-sitting. Give me an example...

School stories of the amusing, absurd, and asinine. Monday, November 16. Old Before Our Time. Y first year of teaching, I lived in a small town where I knew nobody. Thursday, November 12. I concurred."Why yes, Jane will not be back. She has moved.". Well, her family moved to the moon," I replied. Now, in my head, I really meant ...
