Bob and Elaine's journey through the Caribbean. Home for us now is the “Mar Azul” (Spanish for “blue seas”), a 1985 Defever 44 Offshore Cruiser. We bought her in 2009, with the goal of fixing her up for future retirement, liveaboard and travels. Here are some basic statistics:. Beam (width): 15 feet. Draft (depth): 5 feet. Speed: typically 7 knots (about 8 mph) max. Sleeping quarters: 2 cabins – 1 queen berth, 1 double v-berth. Heads (bathrooms): 2, one with a small shower. Engines: Twin Lehmans, 240 hp.

Then the cameras were put away until the seas calmed. Have I mentioned that sea travel in a small boat can be brutal? A brief respite on the Chinchurro Bank at Cayo Norte. Cozumel in the distance, and another land mass to help shelter us from the big waves. We were surprised that there was little boating traffic here.
