The bakery is buzzing from early morning as trainees work alongside our experienced staff to make rolls, breads, oatcakes, tray bakes, biscuits and cakes as well as individual cashew-nut pies and hummus. Our Training Services - The Engine Shed

Although the majority of our trainees come to us from school or college we take people of any age who are experiencing a period of transition. Not everyone is ready to think about employment at 16 or 18 and we always have trainees who are in their late 20's or early 30's when they join the Engine Shed. The Engine Shed Building. The Engine Shed is a lovely old building in St Leonard's Lane, Edinburgh. It dates back to the 1830's and has a fascinating history as part of the 'Innocent Railway' network, the very first passenger railway in Edinburgh. On the ground floor is our bakery, which produces a variety of freshly baked goods for our café and for sale in shops throughout the city and beyond. The Engine Shed is a striking building which has helped create a unique identity for the organisation. Although our formal name is Garvald Community Enterprises, everyone knows and refers to us simply as 'The Engine Shed'. Back in 1989 the very first group of trainees helped make an entertaining short animated film about the building. He thrived on the work routine at the Engine Shed.
