The Spalenka Letters: Save the Rainforest with Genetic Engineering

http://spalenkaletters.blogspot.com/2014/03/save-rainforest-with-genetic-engineering.html

Monday, March 10, 2014. Save the Rainforest with Genetic Engineering. Everyone wants to "Save the Rainforest," but how can it be done most effectively? What are the main economic drivers for clearing the rainforest? One primary driver (particularly in Brazil) is to claim new land area for grazing cattle and raising agricultural crops, and the second primary driver is the harvesting of exotic wood species such as mahogany and teak for luxury export. Compared to our ancient experience with cultivating dome...

Reasonable Soup: March 2011

http://reasonablesoup.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

The musings of a reflective, skeptical college student. Tuesday, March 15, 2011. The Logical Implications of "God as Being Itself.". The conceptualization of God as 'Being Itself' was, to my knowledge, first proposed by theologian Paul Tillich in the early 20th Century. It has been brought to my knowledge by a thoughtful blogger, discussant, and professional theologian with the pseudonym Metacrock (. How can a definition of God be meaningful without being a being? First, we must understand the difference...

Recovering From Dogma: January 2013

http://recoveringfromdogma.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Honestly discussing my trip from dogmatic faith to rational thought. Sunday, January 6, 2013. Sharing the "Good News". I recently saw a Facebook post by a "reasonist" page indicating that the author's Christian friend had become an atheist after watching a documentary entitled Zeitgeist. Apparently without a word from the already-atheist friend. The author was obviously proud that he/she had liberated this person from Christianity and turned them to "reason". Don't they want to "share the good news"?

Reasonable Soup: The Beggar

http://reasonablesoup.blogspot.com/2012/05/beggar.html

The musings of a reflective, skeptical college student. Tuesday, May 1, 2012. I walked out of the bar and grill with a full belly and a smile on my face. A man came up to me and asked for 50 cents - said he was hungry. I opened my wallet and gave him a dollar. Thanks, guy," he said. "God bless.". I was still going to be polite, of course. He probably just says that because people expect him to, and it's a harmless thing, really. Yup," I said, "you're welcome." I didn't say God bless. Why Evolution Is True.

http://mpgtaijiquan.blogspot.com/2015/08/take-nothing-for-granted.html

Mike Garofalo writes about Mind-Body Arts, Philosophy, Nature, and the Eight Ways. Wednesday, August 05, 2015. Take Nothing for Granted. Laetus in praesens animus quod ultra est oderit curare et amara lento temperet risu. Nihil est ab omni parte beatum. Joyful let the soul be in the present, let it disdain to trouble about what is beyond and temper bitterness with a laugh. Nothing is blessed forever.". The clearest sign of wisdom is continued cheerfulness.". Jen Jensen, Bowing to Receive the Mountain.

Arcilaso ...

A scene from the cookout. 8220;Oh in thirty years or so, but by then, I won’t give a fuck! 8221; Meaning by then he’ll be dead, and it will be someone else’s problem. What he said didn’t bother me so much. It’s a common thing to leave a mess for the next person to clean up. I’ve seen it many times before. What struck me was the way he leaned in and said it. His voice lowered just a bit. Again I’m taking liberties. Maybe he just smiles at the thoug...One day...

Wrong Question: Is Humanism Humane? Simon Critchley’s series “The Stone” at the New York Times has just published an upbeat and important interview between Natasha Lennard and Carry Wolfe. It’s a sanguine introduction to posthumanism written for a general audience, an important intervention in a public forum as we gear up for the presidential inauguration. But why—why oh why! Mdash;did it have to be titled: “ Is Humanism Really Humane? Didn’t deconstruction teach us to respond. Agrave; la lettre. Later i...
