The Jobbing Doctor's Book Club

The Jobbing Doctor's Book Club. Wednesday, 6 August 2008. David Lodge: Deaf Sentence. This book is clearly a David Lodge book. If you didn't know the provenance of the author, it would have become apparent on reading the first chapter. Although the place the book is set in is some vague Northern Town, it still is with the main character being a retired University Lecturer in Linguistics (pretty similar to Professor Lodge). I enjoyed it, but wait till it comes out in paperback. Posted by Jobbing Doctor.

The Jobbing Doctor's Book Club: June 2008

http://thejobbingdoctorsbookclub.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

The Jobbing Doctor's Book Club. Sunday, 1 June 2008. The Sandcastle: Iris Murdoch. Is a quintessentially English novel, and it is crafted by one of the finest of 20th Century English Novelists, Iris Murdoch. The novel glides through towards its apotheosis in great style and is one of those books that you are happy to have read, and put down with a contented sigh. Posted by Jobbing Doctor. Random Acts of Heroic Love: Danny Scheinmann. This is a really good book, and deserves a wider circulation. I suspect...

http://thejobbingdoctorsbookclub.blogspot.com/2008/06/random-acts-of-heroic-love-danny.html

The Jobbing Doctor's Book Club. Sunday, 1 June 2008. Random Acts of Heroic Love: Danny Scheinmann. This is a really good book, and deserves a wider circulation. Essentially the narrative falls into two sections, one describing a young man whose girlfriend dies in an accident in Ecuador in the late 1990s, and the other part is about a long journey of an Austrian Soldier who traverses Siberia and Russia with only the thought of love in his mind, set during the main part of the first world war.

Medical Mycroft: Obesity Plans

http://medicalmycroft.blogspot.com/2008/05/obesity-plans.html

Thursday, 15 May 2008. The latest Government priorities include looking at the problems of Obesity within the community. This is becoming an increasing problem as we see the end result of a number of factors:. Loss of community open space and amenities. Increasing use of computer games for entertainment. Parents' paranoia about letting their children play outside or wandering. Loss of school playing fields as a result of Government's failing to ring-fence their use. Posted by Jobbing Doctor. Old Age is a Bitch: September 2008

http://oldageisabitch.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Old Age is a Bitch. Tuesday, 30 September 2008. Yesterday afternoon was bridge once again. We found that last Tuesday's results were on the board. We came second bottom (still at least some played worse than us! I really enjoyed the afternoon. I keep making the odd mistake in filling in my scorecard, so I have to score it out and the card looks messy. However, I saw one of the players using a pen with a built in eraser. So, what did I do? Tracked them down on the internet and ordered them. I find it diff...

Medical Mycroft: Monetarist Madness

http://medicalmycroft.blogspot.com/2008/05/monetarist-madness.html

Saturday, 31 May 2008. One of the great pleasures about travelling away from the general hurly-burly is to take a few good books with me to read - the kind that I find (after an 11 hour day) too exhausting to get into. . I have spent some of my holiday reading (and completing) a book called The Shock Doctrine. By a Canadian Journalist called Naomi Klein. In no particular order:. General Pinochet of Chile. President Suharto of Indonesia. George H W Bush. The Union Solidarnosc (in Poland). I see the hand o...

Old Age is a Bitch: February 2009

http://oldageisabitch.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Old Age is a Bitch. Saturday, 28 February 2009. The veg box delivery ran out of potatoes yesterday, so I had to place an order with T* *o for delivery today between 3 and 5pm (the earliest vacant slots.). 530 I phoned as the order had not arrived. Soft words "the order is on its way". 6pm I phoned again. Same thing. 630 Eventually the store called me back. The order had been left with a neighbour. At last I collected it and I am now fed and watered. Stocked on a regular basis. Labels: chest of drawers.

Medical Mycroft: Welcome Mycroft

http://medicalmycroft.blogspot.com/2008/05/welcome-mycroft.html

Wednesday, 14 May 2008. Mycroft Holmes was Sherlock Holmes' cleverer brother. I have decided to use the euphemism 'Medical Mycroft' so that I can focus on the more philosophical parts of blogging, so the Jobbing Doctor can do all the ranty, whingeing, political type stuff. I am Mycroft, and I slightly despise the down-market approach of my younger brother 'Medical Sherlock' or The Jobbing Doctor. I will be much more educational, and reflective. That is what Blogging is about. Posted by Jobbing Doctor.

The Jobbing Doctor

The Jobbing Doctor has retired, but will be blogging again. Thursday, 24 October 2013. New man at the helm. There are many people who work in the NHS who are quite clear about the Government's agenda for the NHS, and are not fooled by he apparent muddle of policies that have been proposed, which largely seem a smokescreen. Margaret Thatcher started it, John Major and Tony Blair continued it, and we are now approaching the final denouement. The return of Simon Stevens. It is a bad day for the ordinary man...
