http://renocountybirdmen.blogspot.com/2015/02/viceroy-hibernacula-something-about.html
Studying the birds and butterflies of central Kansas. Friday, February 27, 2015. Viceroy Hibernacula: Something about butterflies for a change. Ever wondered what butterflies do during the winter? A few migrate each year (like the Monarch), but most overwinter in our area, either as adults or larvae. The Viceroy, Limenitis archippus,. Reno County Birdmen: Piratics on the High Plains
http://renocountybirdmen.blogspot.com/2015/05/piratics-on-high-plains.html
Studying the birds and butterflies of central Kansas. Wednesday, May 13, 2015. Piratics on the High Plains. News broke on Friday that a Piratic Flycatcher (an ultra rare vagrant from Central America) had been found at Scott State Park in western Kansas. We wished we could chase it on Saturday, but had already had our "big day" at Quivira planned for several months. We decided to check after church on Sunday, and if it was still being seen, entertain chasing this first state record. I love the pirate them...

Studying the birds and butterflies of central Kansas. Thursday, June 4, 2015. Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira on June 1. Things began to pick up some when we revisited the road (NE 170th St.) we had passed over quickly on our way to the rail field. A variety of shorebirds, forced onto the road because of the high water, gave us great looks. The highlights were eight Sanderling, three of which were in alternate plumage, and a Ruddy Turnstone. Alternate plumage Sanderling: photo by Andrew. We finished our run...

Studying the birds and butterflies of central Kansas. Saturday, June 20, 2015. This Coral Hairstreak was feeding on the flowering Privet bush in our yard. It was a lifer! I saw this Variegated Fritillary in our neighbors alfalfa field. This Arogos Skipper was my 71st life butterfly in Kansas. Sunday, June 14, 2015. If you are interested in getting into ...
