A Word from Sharon: July 2012
http://twrblogtalk.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
A Word from Sharon. Saturday, July 14, 2012. How can I ignore, the boy. . . It used to be, if you wanted to be a writer, the prime advice you were given was, "read." You were advised to read books, magazines, newspapers – just keep reading. The purpose of all this reading was to help you recognize words, sentences, paragraphs – not to mention style and rhythm. It's still good advice although it comes today with a caveat. 8226; tow the line. This is so common, I see it several times a week. In case yo...

A Word from Sharon: August 2010
http://twrblogtalk.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
A Word from Sharon. Wednesday, August 11, 2010. Overuse it and . . . lose it. There are some words which are used incorrectly just because there's a poor understanding of how they're supposed to be used. "Irony" is an example. "Literally" and "figuratively" are examples. I'm sure you can come up with many examples of your own. Come on, you people. Enough with the icons. My last irksome entry for today is one I haven't seen anyone else complain about but it's becoming increasingly commonly used. It is...

A Word from Sharon: April 2012
http://twrblogtalk.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
A Word from Sharon. Thursday, April 19, 2012. When our son was small, I used to read religiously all the research about violence on television and in the movies and ponder if it was going to affect him. I wanted to be one of those progressive parents who pooh-poohed the idea that images on a screen could over-rule a gentle up-bringing but I couldn't shake the thought that if images on a screen were so benign, why was advertising such a powerful billion-dollar force? This is food we're talking about, beau...

A Word from Sharon: September 2010

A Word from Sharon. Thursday, September 30, 2010. Lead me not into . . . I can guarantee that before the end of this week – and it's almost here – I will, once again, see some variation on this: "He lead her down the garden path to show her the newly planted marigolds.". You're right. It should be, "He led her down . . .". It seems so easy and yet it's such a commonly made error. Perhaps it's understandable. Never mind. If you can keep your head while all about you are loosing theirs . . .

A Word from Sharon: June 2010
http://twrblogtalk.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html
A Word from Sharon. Thursday, June 24, 2010. Are we language snobs? One of the dilemmas that print journalists often struggle with is how much to modify people's speech within a direct quote – or whether to modify it at all. That one is easy: if you're going to make appropriate corrections for the mayor/premier/prime minister, you have to make them for others whom you're quoting in the story. But should you be changing anyone's actual words? I saw the smoke and my wife and I both ran into the house to ge...

A Word from Sharon. Tuesday, May 4, 2010. A matter of degree. When my son read the previous entry. He assured me that it's possible to write in the language of text and use proper grammar simultaneously. I was happy to accept his word on this. Just because I have shown some open-mindedness on the subject of alternative communication doesn't mean that I'm ready to relax my high standards on the proper use – spelling, punctuation, grammar – of language. Most recently, it's a television commercial that has ...

A Word from Sharon: December 2010
http://twrblogtalk.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
A Word from Sharon. Friday, December 31, 2010. Verbing the nouns, nouning the verbs. I try to be quite open-minded and not have an attitude written-in-stone about our ever-changing language. Perhaps, as in raising your children, it makes sense to pick your fights. There are some battles you're not going to win, I say sadly, as I reflect on the lovely Jill Barber. S new book of lullabies which is based on her song,. We know where I stand. Or quite commonly on social media sites, "an epic fail. As I began ...
