Tinkering Lab

Getting my geek on. Sunday, February 10, 2013. Remember this sourdough failure. Flat, ugly, yucky.a total failure. I gave it another shot. I think the last time I made this recipe. I must have done it wrong. Maybe I skipped an important step or something. I don't remember letting it sit in the refrigerator for 12 hours. I think that's where it went wrong. This time it turned out great! The dough after 12 hours of refrigeration, added the remaining ingredients, and kneeded - just before the rise. Thursday...

Tinkering Lab: December 2010

http://tinkeringlab.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Getting my geek on. Wednesday, December 22, 2010. Following in the tradition of my chainmail dice bag. I thought I had an original idea only to find someone post a similar project just a few days after I completed mine. During a rehearsal for Annie Get Your Gun. If you didn't see this post. I played the part of Chief Sitting Bull), I was watching the director describe the effects she had in mind for Annie's big trick. Shoot the yellow ones first.). Back to the air canon. Two days after I complete my cano...

Tinkering Lab: December 2012

http://tinkeringlab.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html

Getting my geek on. Thursday, December 27, 2012. Automatic Christmas Tree Waterer. This project was a good exercise and learning experience for me. I learned a couple things the hard way (sometimes the best way):. It turns out water isn't as conductive as I thought it would be. 5vdc in tap water is enough to electro etch (erode/dissolve) small wires in about a day. This was my idea. But mine's better. It fills the tree up for you.". My son responded, "Well, why don't you build it? Of course I can, it's m...

Tinkering Lab: Pie Boxes - Part 2: The Picture

http://tinkeringlab.blogspot.com/2009/08/pie-boxes-part-2-picture.html

Getting my geek on. Saturday, August 15, 2009. Pie Boxes - Part 2: The Picture. I documented the box construction. Here in Part 2 I'll be explaining the "magic" behind the making of the picture for the lid. It's a great shot of the stars of the show, but not such a great shot of the image on the box. But it was the best I had so I gave it a try. I used the shear tool to stretch and manipulate the image until I had the picture as truly round as I could tell. After scanning it I used Inkscape. Of course, t...

Tinkering Lab: Pie Boxes - Part 1: The Box

http://tinkeringlab.blogspot.com/2009/08/pie-boxes-part-1-box.html

Getting my geek on. Thursday, August 13, 2009. Pie Boxes - Part 1: The Box. A few months ago (wow.has it really been 4 months? My sister made a request. For a pie box like the one used on Pushing Daisies. A very scrumptious show that everyone needs to watch). Little did she know that I had already begun the planning of such a project, but now with her help I could get the dimensions right. The inspirational box from Pushing Daisies. I decided to give Google Sketchup. For the top and bottom I found some s...

Caffwa Cwanico: August 2009

http://caffwa.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 30, 2009. I took the family out to have a little "rocket party" last Saturday. I had been working on a rocket with an onboard digital video camera and it was finally finished. (More information on this over at my Tinkering Lab blog. The kids were funny to watch during the launches. Even though the rockets aren't that loud, the kids would plug their ears and flinch away. They even seemed to be a little scared of the launch controller, hitting the switch and almost running from it. That phot...

It’s a Trap! | Aaron Eiche

http://aaroneiche.com/2013/01/04/its-a-trap

Learn just enough to be dangerous. It’s a Trap! For the past few years, my brother and I have been pranking. Each other a bit when it comes to gifts. It took on a rather peculiar theme a couple of years ago when my brother gave me a copy of Starcraft II. He had cleverly hidden it in a Warcraft III box and when I opened it. I did my best to express gratitude. Before I could get very far, he exclaimed in his best Admiral Ackbar “It’s a Trap! The box before opening. If you’re interested, File Download...

Bread | Aaron Eiche

http://aaroneiche.com/2012/12/12/bread

Learn just enough to be dangerous. Sometime before Thanksgiving we (Hykel and I) agreed to bring bread to Thanksgiving Dinner. Rolls, specifically. I figured when we’d agreed to it that we would probably just be buying something at the store and taking them like we usually did. That week however, I got it in my head that making them at home would be better. My mixer, which is an amazing machine. What the heck, I think I’ll pull that out and use it. Realizing that I was, in fact, capable of making bread, ...

Star Trek! | Aaron Eiche

http://aaroneiche.com/2012/11/30/star-trek

Learn just enough to be dangerous. I was going to say that this is the nerdiest thing I’ve done in public in a while. But I was presenting at MakerFaire. Just a couple of months ago, so I guess not. I digress. Hi-definition TVs have been around for long enough that they’ve actually become pretty affordable. You can find most of your favorite shows on Blu-Ray, and most any broadcast or cable channel provides an HD version for viewing. A suspicious missing entrant was. Trek: The Next Generation. We arrived...

10 minutes with Cory Doctorow | Aaron Eiche

http://aaroneiche.com/2013/02/12/10-minutes-with-cory-doctorow

Learn just enough to be dangerous. 10 minutes with Cory Doctorow. This past Wednesday, I had the opportunity to go see Cory Doctorow (arguably my favorite author) on the local stop of his tour for his new book. And I A number of years ago I was talking about something that Cory was involved in (rather excitedly), and she looked at me and said “Who? 8221; It hadn’t occurred to me that. Didn’t know who Cory Doctorow was. Since then, it’s always been our joke whenever I bring him up. And here was this perso...

Me at the Portland MakerFaire | Aaron Eiche

http://aaroneiche.com/2012/09/20/me-at-the-portland-makerfaire

Learn just enough to be dangerous. Me at the Portland MakerFaire. This past Saturday (Sept 15) I got to participate in Portland’s first annual MakerFaire. I’ve written about MakerFaires. Before, but this is the first one where I was showing off a project. Note: I do plan on sharing the details of my Kinect-driven Roomba in a future post. This post is more about my experience at the faire. Decided to have a booth hosting anything its members wanted to show. At this point. I didn’t have anything. You that ...

Caffwa Cwanico: January 2009

http://caffwa.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, January 27, 2009. Our first time snow caving. We went to Timberline Lodge on Mt Doom.er, I mean Mt Hood. 1 David learned that jeans aren't very warm in snow, especially when wet. 2 I learned that a plastic tarp on an icy cave floor likes to quickly find the lowest point in the cave. We slept horribly, but we had fun. Timberline Lodge is beautiful and I'd like to go back there in the summer.maybe even next winter for some skiing. Tuesday, January 6, 2009. Welcome to the Caffwa Cwanico.
