Town Mouse and Country Mouse

Thursday, August 13, 2015. Kezar Triangle, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. Mr Wood Rat and I had occasion recently to cross Kezar Triangle on our way to eat a picnic lunch and watch the lawn bowlers in Golden Gate Park. We've crossed Kezar Triangle before, and enjoyed watching people play sports or exercise their dogs on the extensive green space. It was not otherwise very interesting, just a threadbare grassy field worn into rutted paths here and there that got soggy in the rain, bordered by three roads.

Town Mouse and Country Mouse: June 2014

http://tmousecmouse.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Saturday, June 28, 2014. Fifty Shades of Green. I admit a temporary temptation for a post titled "Fifty Shades of Grey". And really, some plants of the California summer garden do offer a credible semblance of grey - just look at the Salvia sonomensis x clevlandii above. But with some forethought, it's actually possible to arrive at a pleasing combination of different shades of grey-green to green to almost-lime-green. But Arctostaphylos St. Helena, a manzanita that will become a small tree, proves t...

Town Mouse and Country Mouse: October 2014

http://tmousecmouse.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 30, 2014. Now That's a Green Roof! When I visited the California Academy of Sciences a few years ago, right after they opened, I was enchanted with their green roof. Which was, at the time, very new. Last week, I went back and found that the roof had matured and looked even better. It was interesting how the coconut fiber baskets that hold the earth and plants in place are now completely invisible. I had visited Rana Creek Nursery. Don't miss the Academy if you're in the city. It's ...

Town Mouse and Country Mouse: The California Native Landscape by Greg Rubin and Lucy Warren

http://tmousecmouse.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-california-native-landscape-by-greg.html

Wednesday, August 5, 2015. The California Native Landscape by Greg Rubin and Lucy Warren. When I first read The California Native Landscape by Greg Rubin and Lucy Warren, I didn't altogether like it. But then I'm not actually who this book was written for. Once I got that - this became my favorite new book to spread the word about. The California Native Landscape. This book doesn't just give the what, but also very nicely conveys the why. The structure of the book is a sandwich format. Then the filling o...

Town Mouse and Country Mouse: Wonder in an unexpected moment - western azalea (and phacelia and red twig dogwood)

http://tmousecmouse.blogspot.com/2015/05/wonder-in-unexpected-moment-western.html

Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Wonder in an unexpected moment - western azalea (and phacelia and red twig dogwood). Note: this post is edited as I had misidentified red twig dogwood as ninebark - I won't do that again! My thanks to an astute commenter (see below.). So as I drive the creek-side road up towards our ridge-top road, I keep my eye open for seeding natives that might like to extend their reach by a mile or two to my restoration garden. I stopped to check and - POW! I took four flower heads that had mo...

Garden Plant List for Zone 3 | Northern Shade Gardening

http://northernshade.ca/plant-list

Gardening in a cold climate under the trees. This beautiful fern has a delicate appearance with its thin black stalks and its airy looking foliage, but it is hardy. It looks great in the shade under trees and contrasts nicely with broad leafed plants. 8216;Diamant’ (astilbe). 8216;Europa’ (astilbe). This is a medium sized astilbe with a terrific soft pink flower. The flower colour is my favourite of all astilbes. When the flower fades to brown, I leave them on the plant for winter interest. Trail Master Outdoors Radio on KALL 700 Sports, Utah Outdoors to Around the Globe Talk Radio

Thursday, November 13, 2014. Wild turkeys doing well in Utah. Did you know that Utah has a thriving population of wild turkeys? And that Thanksgiving is one of the best times of the year to see turkeys in the wild? Turkeys brought to Utah from outside the state have helped the state’s population grow to more than 20,000 birds. Winter is a great time to see them. Robinson says April is the most exciting time to watch them. "The males are in their bright, colorful breeding plumage," he says. "Watch...Turke...
