frothsof D&D: February 2014
http://frothsofdnd.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Friday, February 28, 2014. So the other day I read someone, somewhere, categorizing the giant rat as a “throw-away” monster. In fact, they went so far as to imply that an adventure that uses giant rats is boring and/or uncreative. I personally love giant rats, but like many monsters, its really the way that you use them that is important. This sort of thing was covered before in the famous Dragon mag essay “Tucker’s Kobolds”. Tales of Aeril: Beware the lowly kobald - Using history to create a truely deadly advisary
http://talesofaeril.blogspot.com/2016/08/beware-lowly-kobald-using-history-to.html
Tuesday, August 23, 2016. Beware the lowly kobald - Using history to create a truely deadly advisary. By now most have heard the tale of Tuckers Kobdalds. Snakes inside bags, packs, and chests. Continuing with the use of natural biological weapons, snakes as well as spiders, centipedes, or any other naturally occurring venomous creature works well as a trap or deterrent to any one snooping through a kobald's treasure. Notes From Under the Kyak: July 2010
http://underthekyak.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html
Tuesday, July 27, 2010. Spis Castle, Slovenia. I found this in a random search, but it's exactly the kind of castle that I want to put on top of a megadungeon. I've included the floor plan from this page. So for one of my challenges, I'm going to try to "populate" the first floor of this puppy. I'm pretty rusty, so I might just break out the dice and the stocking chart from either B/X or AD&D DMG. Labels: Castle floor plan. Monday, July 26, 2010. So here's my ground rules for this project. I will spe...

Crafts, roleplaying, and general nerdery. Tabletop: Removing the Ugly Bits from “The Lost Mine of Phandelver”, Part 1: Goblin Ambush. February 13, 2015. At the beginning of winter last year, I was on Amazon picking up some necessaries. Halfway through shopping, the suggestion bar offered up the D&D 5th edition starter box on discount. Curse you, Amazon, for knowing exactly how to get me to impulse buy. 🙂. The first major site in “Lost Mine” it’s worth a look. Aside from the racism, I have another proble...

Casting words into darkness. An introduction, of sorts. May 11, 2016. May 17, 2016. Welcome to the final (at least for now) installment in the series converting Atomic Robo rules to run a Sunless Sea-inspired game. Previously, we covered character and ship generation. As well as ship combat, trading and zeafaring. This post will have little to do with rules, instead focusing on exploration and mystery of SS, and how to run such a game. And that’s not a bad thing! This is the least Fate-like situation, wi...

Casting words into darkness. An introduction, of sorts. November 3, 2014. 8230;in which Magician talks of himself in third person and reinvents GNS. FGI requires players to overcome challenges. AGM requires player characters to overcome challenges. MSC requires players to describe how their characters overcome challenges. A question of playstyle. Of particular interest here is AD&D and its predecessors, however you count them. Although it lacks rules for exploration, there arose a culture of FGI. It atte...
