Last week the College graduated three more students - two from our little community of Carmen Pampa, and one from around the corner. Juan Ortega researched the incidence of parasites in elementary school students in his home community of Nogalani, on the other side of Uchumachi mountain. Friday, March 20, 2009. Some volunteers and I with a few of the girls from the PRE. Note the girl who brought a stuffed animal for the pic. Before the semester started, around 200 kids came and took an entrance exam, none passed but the 85 highest scores were accepted to the “PRE”. After the successful completion of the pre-curriculum they will all move into one of the other 5 “carreras” Veterinary, Agronomy, Nursing, Teaching, or Eco-Tourism. Tuesday, April 21, 2009. The interesting thing about religion here is how it has mixed and coexists with pre-Columbian beliefs. It’s not just at festivals. Miners give alcohol, coca, and even blood to ensure safety and good luck. They might say Hail Maries on their way to work, but the respects they pay to Catholic figures are nowhere near as institutionalized or ingrained into their culture as the rituals they perform for more archaic deities. Friday, April 3, 2009. This Coke truck got jammed up against the wall outside our neighbors (the sisters) house. They left it overnight in the road, a little off to the side and during the night it slid in the mud. They have spent a couple days trying to dig it out, at some point they will probably have to call someone to pull it out. Belize is where I am for the next several weeks putting my permaculture skills into practice. Coconut palm being planted with mulch below. Well, you have to weed them out so others survive.
