Why am I rambling? Notes from the field. Monday, May 6, 2013. Not in my slow cooker. From left to right (best guess): black bear, cougar, cougar,. Bear cub, lynx, badger. On the bottom: polar bear. Conversation the other day turned macabre as guests, who are heading out bear hunting this week, asked my husband how to clean a bear’s skull for display - not surprisingly, my husband knows about these sorts of things. Case of skulls photo was taken here. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I’m an oceanographer...

Why am I rambling? Notes from the field. Saturday, March 30, 2013. Turdus migratorius (backyard Robins). This is not a Robin. How the ordinary can be missed. Winter is over and I’m delighted to report it’s warm enough to sleep with my window open! My island in the Pacific is temperate, not tropical, so spring warmth is always welcome. With the window open, the first and last thing I hear each day is singing birds. I’ve read that robins go through puberty once a year ( article here. Tuesday, March 26, 2013.

Why am I rambling? Notes from the field. Notes from the field. Ice bergs in Scott Inlet. Why am I rambling? Notes from the field. Thursday, August 29, 2013. Might see some of these. I'm heading up north again in a few weeks – I won't believe I'm actually going until I get on the plane as delays are typical, even expected. Excess ice has already pushed our schedule back and it's impossible to predict what else might come up before I leave. To get to Scott Inlet, we'll have to skirt the edge of Baffin Bay. Wikipedia says that John Davis. Was the first European there in 1585, but I wonder how f...

July 18, 2014. What I am working on. I am currently coming to the end of a three week writing break, so if I’ve been working on anything its normal life: surfing in Cornwall, seeing friends, even cooking; it all comes up fresh and shiny after a year in a room with a laptop. I am also working with the Michael Joseph team at Penguin UK to promote my debut novel, Daughter, out August 28. I’ve also just sent out the synopsis of Book three; I’ll tell you more when I know. Why do I write what I do? You are com...
