Observations about design, art, style &c. Dec 15, 2014 at 11:02am with 1 note. Atelier de recherche plastique. Another fine sale of Important Design at Wright Gallery. If I ever get tired of going to the Wright previews, I guess I shouldn’t be alive. The tactile nature of attending it really works to satiate my admittedly obsessive need to touch beautiful things, thereby providing me with a verisimilitude of ownership - brief though it may be. I’ve often had issues with Wright’s pre-sale esti...I’m...

Observations about design, art, style &c. Mar 20, 2015 at 12:14pm. A near miss for the wrecker’s ball. Sigh of relief department: In a sign of what I guess is a newly vigorous real estate market, there’s been a spate of demolitions on the north side recently, most with the promise [? Of hulking apartment blocks: the former Powell’s site on Lincoln, the former Bucca di Beppo site on Clark, and the much lamented. And the griffins are true works of art. This, again, is another in a series of unheralded - an...

Observations about design, art, style &c. Jan 20, 2015 at 1:04am. Look up. More significantly, just look. In the category of places you look at repeatedly but never really see: Dinkel’s Bakery. It is such a great facade - nice, intact terra cotta [love the rondels and the fluted panels], plus the rich marble base and brushed stainless trim - that I am sure would be landmarked if it were in Miami Beach or Hollywood. Not so here in the Smelly Onion. The similarly intact and handsome terra cotta facade on t...
