Wadlstrumpf

Travels in Southern Germany. Sunday, July 26, 2015. Berlin photo dump, Days 2-4. On our second day in Berlin, Stefan headed off to the Technical University to give a talk, and Elias and I walked through the Tiergarten to the Siegess. The bottom part of the column is covered with detailed mosaics. It's 285 steps to the top (295 if you count the steps on the outside). Can you see Alexanderplatz in the distance? We took a train to the Dahlem-Dorf stop, with Hanna and two dogs expertly joining us en route.

Wadlstrumpf: July 2014

http://wadlstrumpf.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Travels in Southern Germany. Thursday, July 24, 2014. Benediktbeuern and a new cousin. Could it be, could it be- the last Wadlstrumpf post of the 2014? I close with photos from two quick southern Germany side trips. This worm was longer than a 7-yr-old's shoe. The day began with sunshine, and then a storm swept through in the afternoon. We returned from our walk just as the skies opened up. Finally, a quick trip to meet the newest member of the family. Baby L is E's first cousin once removed. To go to ou...

Wadlstrumpf: Der Triumph des guten Geschmacks

http://wadlstrumpf.blogspot.com/2015/07/der-triumph-des-guten-geschmacks.html

Travels in Southern Germany. Monday, July 20, 2015. Der Triumph des guten Geschmacks. Look what Elias found! This is the weirdest made-in-Germany product I have ever seen. The can says Der Triumph des guten Geschmacks. And to think, all of this, for just one Euro! As far as we know, this triumph is available- along with similarly canned triumphs like salted peanuts and sour fruit gummies- only in a vending machine in a rehab hospital for geriatric patients in a tiny town about 14km outside of Dachau.

Wadlstrumpf: Hallo

http://wadlstrumpf.blogspot.com/2015/07/hallo.html

Travels in Southern Germany. Tuesday, July 7, 2015. When I first visited Bavaria in 1991, I learned how to greet folks in the Bavarian style. One could say Grüß dich/Gria. To individuals, or Grüß euch/. To groups, or Grüß Gott. To anyone. All of these are short versions of Es Grüße dich/euch Gott. Meaning "May God greet you-singular/plural." If one wanted to demonstrate one wasn't from these here parts, one could say Guten Tag. Good day), or simply Tag. Rather than Grüß dich/euch. To folks, they say Hallo.

Wadlstrumpf: Berlin photo dump, Day 1

http://wadlstrumpf.blogspot.com/2015/07/berlin-photo-dump-day-1.html

Travels in Southern Germany. Friday, July 24, 2015. Berlin photo dump, Day 1. As usual, living life got in the way of blogging, so I'm resorting to photo dumps. We took a side trip to Berlin last week. We set out late Tuesday night on the overnight train. If you're looking for an uncomfortable night's non-sleep, then the night train is for you! Here's a photo of E on the. Ladder up to the top bunk. He's climbing up backward, because I'm occupying the rest of the space. A friend's book auf Deutsch. Wikipe...

Might Oughta Should: September 2014

http://mightoughtashould.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Where triple modals are the norm. Tuesday, September 16, 2014. Porcelain and a spider. One of the joys of culling together three part-time jobs doing three different things I (fortunately) really enjoy and that require reporting largely only to myself, is that when things pile up, they really pile up. At some point, I will take photos of the new glazes I've been using. Initial results have ranged from truly spectacular to good-for-under-plants to not-even-its-mother-could-love. Might Oughta Should: August 2015

http://mightoughtashould.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Where triple modals are the norm. Monday, August 17, 2015. My neighbor called me over to her porch today to see a freshly molted cicada. Its exoskeleton had just fallen off, and it was hanging upside down on a brick pedestal, drying its wings and its tender fleshy surface. I think the photos below are easier to study when the bug is rotated 180 degrees. I also find the cicada less skin-crawly to look at at when the photos are sepia toned. Monday, August 10, 2015. Sunday, August 9, 2015. Is better than an...

http://mightoughtashould.blogspot.com/2012/09/summer-recap-continued-bridges-2012.html

Where triple modals are the norm. Thursday, September 27, 2012. Summer recap continued: Bridges 2012. Way back in July, my pottery-, parenthood-, and standing-in-line. Friend Dr. J (Duke PhD in Mathematics, 2009) and I traveled to Towson University to attend the Bridges Conference. According to the Bridges website, the conference is the largest mathematics and art interdisciplinary conference in the world, so you can see why J was the perfect travel companion. What did you say those are made of? J and I ...

Might Oughta Should: Bridges 2015 and Baltimore photo dump

http://mightoughtashould.blogspot.com/2015/08/bridges-2015-and-baltimore-photo-dump.html

Where triple modals are the norm. Sunday, August 9, 2015. Bridges 2015 and Baltimore photo dump. I spent five very full days in Baltimore. I gave an ocarina-making workshop. A topic for a later blog post) to have the ocarinas bisque-fired. I picked them up on Saturday and distributed them to their makers. A bunch of mathematician-made functional ocarinas. A happy music-making mathematician. While I was in Baltimore, still embracing the jetlag from our Germany. I found a 5K for Saturday morning. I fin...

http://mightoughtashould.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Where triple modals are the norm. Tuesday, June 23, 2015. Monday, June 15, 2015. It's stinkin' hot outside. The brand new summer studio has AC! Who needs a foyer, anyway? Labels: safety in the pottery studio. Tuesday, June 2, 2015. Yet more plants and bugs. Ten days ago, I posted this photo of a baby prickly pear pad:. Here's what it looks like today:. For a plant that grows slowly, what a huge investment of energy that is! Ten days ago, I didn't post this photo of a mystery onion-like weed in our yard:.

Might Oughta Should: November 2014

http://mightoughtashould.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Where triple modals are the norm. Sunday, November 30, 2014. We went to Ocracoke Island with friends for Thanksgiving break. We don't visit the coast very often. Our first beach day began with lots of clouds. But the sun poked through. And drove almost all the clouds away. E's a sandcastle kinda guy. While his friend E prefers running with pelicans. After a few hours of wading and building sand. Castles in wind and sun, boys needed to rest. Orion and Taurus over the beach. Like father, like son. Durham C...

http://mightoughtashould.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Where triple modals are the norm. Sunday, July 20, 2014. Several years ago, I took two classes taught by Jamie Kirkpatrick. CE's secret code soaked up the smoke. My best result: copper wire mask with oxidation spot from hole in saggar. Zigzag pot with oxidation spot from saggar hole (red slip on white clay). Totally reduced chickens and nested spheroid with one of Jamie's pots to the right and K.S.F.'s pots to the left. Jamie pot with swirl. Heavy metal stripes on a Jamie pot.
