it ain't bunk: April 2013

Tuesday, 30 April 2013. An armageddon rabbit-hole I once called "the office.". Recently, I reconnected with my own past and the Cold War. The good folks at my former employer, the Diefenbunker, Canada's Cold War Museum. Were kind enough to publish a piece I wrote, " In the Bunker's Shadow. On their blog. Just a few reflections on the echoes of the Cold War and their effect on me throughout my wanderings. Tuesday, 9 April 2013. First the Africans, then the Jews? A precursor to this? And it goes like this:.

it ain't bunk: November 2013
http://it-aint-bunk.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Thursday, 28 November 2013. What makes a good bad ending to a war film? Happy endings in movies are a pain in the ass. Not only are they usually predictable, but they very often gloss over all the real and useful stuff of history. Maybe that's why I like short films so much - they don't have to pander to a mass audience looking for a hero and triumph or, at the least, a silver lining. SPOILER ALERTS BELOW* * Watch the films first if you care. And the next one:. Yes, but that's what sucks. The idea behind...

it ain't bunk: December 2013
http://it-aint-bunk.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Saturday, 7 December 2013. Europe: a martial peace? Turns out, based on my limited sample, that whether they want to simply have peace in Europe, or unite the continent politically in a happy union, there's a common thread to their answer: more war. Only difference is, they all agree that the new (and presumanly even more fun) wars should happen outside Europe, against somebody else. It's totally logical. Can't stop fighting with your spouse? Pope Urban II (1042-1099). Duc de Sully (1560-1641). Europe mu...

it ain't bunk: February 2014

Wednesday, 26 February 2014. A war nerd, friends, is what you get when you cross the gonzo journalism of crazy American expats in 1990s Moscow. With military history. I just finished reading the Gary Brecher/War Nerd's eponymous book, a collection of testosterone-fuelled, self-loathing musings on military history and revelling in blood and guts. The book is mostly on contemporary conflicts, but check out the link above for some of his articles on older wars. His newer stuff is here. Random cool WW1 links:.

it ain't bunk: June 2013
http://it-aint-bunk.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 5 June 2013. Monographin' the Great War again. Good at history, not so good at catchy titles. Here's a quickie just to get the ball rolling again after a prolonged absence. I was told to read a one-volume history of the First World War, so I did. It's rather uninspiring title, 1914-1918. Dude totally looks stressed, no wonder he panicked. The Brits come off fairly well, as Stevenson figures Germany would have beaten France and Russia in a matter of months without them. I am not so sure abo...

it ain't bunk: The Poles, saviours of capitalism?
http://it-aint-bunk.blogspot.com/2013/10/the-poles-saviours-of-capitalism.html
Thursday, 24 October 2013. The Poles, saviours of capitalism? Reading Red Eagle, White Star. Reminded me that the First World War's shadow hides a lot of cool/terrible things. One of them is the batshit crazy war between the brand-new Polish Republic and the brand-new USSR. A British guy. Even called the battle of Warsaw the 18th decisive battle in world history, and the Poles are still raving about it. Aside from awesome literature. That's the pro-Polish Cole's Notes version. Stalin cutting his teeth as...

it ain't bunk: Britain triumphs again - in colour
http://it-aint-bunk.blogspot.com/2013/10/britain-triumphs-again-in-colour.html
Saturday, 19 October 2013. Britain triumphs again - in colour. Colour can help bridge that gap a little, and this British documentary I stumbled across on youtube was fun to watch. Other than the above, I had a few thoughts while watching. Though I think it's legit to take a Fritz Fischer. Was also not mentioned. This all serves to create the impression that there was a large "moral gap" between the two sides, which I don't think there was. It was cool to see the veterans interviewed, and reminded me of ...
