On our way from watching a spectacular sunset and drinking margaritas, we met a pair of Texans who had the best description for Santa Fe: it's the Quebec City of America. It has a much more European feel to it than anywhere else in the US, and history seeps from every sun-baked stone. The water is so clear you can see 25 feet deep. People in Roswell take their aliens very seriously. Some under nourished aliens.

After a great morning hike in Fern Canyon, we packed up, said goodbye to the ocean and headed inland through yet more spectacular stands of redwoods to the interstate. Destination: Portland. 8221; as we sampled the offerings of seemingly endless “pods” of food carts. Finally, late in the day, we crossed the border back into Canada and had a warm welcome at Dave's place. Good to be back! Portland, here we come.

We enjoyed our visit, but we did leave feeling as though the telling of the history of the plantation was a bit too simple and lacked a full accounting of slavery that, after all, is the only thing that allowed the plantation to exist at all. Saw our first alligator, which did a lot to encourage us to stay on the paths!
